American Aces...Their Last Hurrah?

Precious few of America's aces are still with us. When the last ace "goes west," all their fascinating memories will be lost to history. Sad to say, James Oleson's IN THEIR OWN WORDS: THE FINAL CHAPTER, TRUE STORIES FROM AMERICAN FIGHTER ACES may be the last gathering of oral histories from those singular men.
Oleson's book brings together reminiscences from 80-odd aces including Steve Pisanos, Bud Anderson, Nial Castle, 'Herky' Green, Ham McWhorter, Don Lopez, Ken Dahlberg, Frank Gailer, Ralph Foltz, Don Strait, Ted Winters, Bill Hardy, Jim Kasler, etc. Entries range from one page to several pages in length. Many are illustrated with photographs of that particular ace. While many of the entries rehash combats, some describe training (mis)adventures, testing aircraft and so on.
I have to say I enjoyed THE FINAL CHAPTER more than Oleson's previous work IN THEIR OWN WORDS: TRUE STORIES AND ADVENTURES OF THE AMERICAN FIGHTER ACE. A number of entries in that book were mere snippets, sound bits from various aces. The entries in this book are more fulsome and informative.
Having met various aces over the years, it's sad to note their passing. Getting to know men such as Joe Foss, Sammy Pierce, Guy Bordelon, Pete Peterson and Ralph Wandrey has been one of the pleasures of my life. IN THEIR OWN WORDS: THE FINAL CHAPTER is a fitting tribute to all those wonderful warriors of old. Recommended.

An excellent addition to my collection of military aviation books.

My uncle, Lt Col Cecil Foster, ret, contributed to this book, and I very much enjoyed reading his as well as the others entries. It had an interesting syle of gathering what seemed to be almost background thoughts from many of the contributors. I highly recommend this book for those interested in fleshing out a fuller picture of the thoughts of our fighter aces.
