Strange the Dreamer, by Laini Taylor

A new epic fantasy by National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestselling author Laini Taylor of the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy.
The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way around--and Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. Since he was five years old he's been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it. Then a stunning opportunity presents itself, in the person of a hero called the Godslayer and a band of legendary warriors, and he has to seize his chance to lose his dream forever. What happened in Weep two hundred years ago to cut it off from the rest of the world? What exactly did the Godslayer slay that went by the name of god? And what is the mysterious problem he now seeks help in solving?
The answers await in Weep, but so do more mysteries--including the blue-skinned goddess who appears in Lazlo's dreams. How did he dream her before he knew she existed? and if all the gods are dead, why does she seem so real?
In this sweeping and breathtaking new novel by National Book Award finalist Laini Taylor, author of the New York Times bestselling Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy, the shadow of the past is as real as the ghosts who haunt the citadel of murdered gods. Fall into a mythical world of dread and wonder, moths and nightmares, love and carnage.
Welcome to Weep.

I'd just pause every few paragraphs to put the book down and sigh over how beautiful it was
By Michella (YA Books Girl)
I have finally composed myself, I think.

LAINI TAYLOR CONTINUES TO SHRED MY HEART.

Nope. Never mind. Not composed.
Will never be composed. What is life.

All right, SO. STRANGE THE DREAMER is phenomenal. Gorgeous, lush, magical, heartbreaking. It's The Laini Taylor Brand, okay. It's also the book I'll use to answer "If you were stranded on a desert island and had one book to read forever, what would it be?" I never actually thought I'd have an answer to this question. But while I was reading this, I'd just pause every few paragraphs to put the book down and sigh over how beautiful it was. Which is why my first night of reading, I got less than 30 pages into it.

"There were no books to hide behind, and no shadows--only Lazlo Strange in his worn gray robes, with his nose that had been broken by fairy tales, looking like the hero of no story ever told. Or. No story ever yet told."

This is a story for the dreamers, for the ones that look at the ocean and hope for a glimpse of Ariel or Nessie. For the ones who could spend a day with a book, and still be thinking about it when they finish the final page. For the lost ones, and the scared ones, and the broken ones. For the hopeful ones, for the shunned ones, for the weird ones.

This book is slow. Like, achingly slow. But broken Godslayer Eril-Fane, rebellious Ruby, clueless Feral, bookdragon Lazlo, sweetsweet Sparrow, blue gold hearted Sarai, twisted and bitter Minya, and so many others will wrestle your heart from you.

Happy book birthday STRANGE THE DREAMER. May you bring a little more magic and compassion into the world.

Luscious Prose & A Unique Fantasy World
By Hannah
Strange the Dreamer offers the same luscious and imaginative prose one can always anticipate from a novel written by Laini Taylor.

There's a considerable amount of foundational exposition and world building, as this is the first book in a new series, but the author finds a delicate balance between introducing readers to a new world with never-before-seen mythical creatures and delivering a complete story with a cast of intriguing characters. While Lazlo makes for a likable and refreshing protagonist, he's accompanied by a batch of equally alluring characters such as a tricky alchemist, a sage monk, a sly thief, and a blue-skinned goddess, to name a few.

This book is a mixed bag of everything readers want from an epic fantasy: magic and whimsy; a fresh take on supernatural abilities; a compelling mystery; an undeniable sense of exploration and adventure; a new realm of fantastical proportions, and a satisfying ending that sets the stage for more to come.

Locales are easy to visualize in one's mind, character motivations sing with truth, and the electric thrill of young love is portrayed with velvet language.

A dazzling start to an exhilarating new series, Strange the Dreamer offers beauty and wonder, magic and mysticism, monsters and gods.

Instant favorite!
By amy
Still trying to recover from this book hangover. The world that Laini Taylor creates is so submersive as to require some time to get your head back in the real world. In the best way possible. For the dreamers of the world, this is their lives, laid out before you, spun from wisps of their own reflections and emotions like cotton candy, in the most silky prose. Certain experiences, like realizing the rediculousness of a nightmare while IN the nightmare has been laid out, making you think, why yes, that's exactly how that happens. Knowing that people don't care for you, or your odd proliclivities, and not caring, but embracing your uniqueness, being triumphant in your knowledge of self worth. This is what this book detailed for me. This was a wonder, with great characters, great plot, great writing. Yes, it is slow. Did that bother me? Usually it would, but the quality of the writing had me savoring each page, rather than devouring it. Letting each sentence linger on my tongue, rather than gulp and frantically flip the page.

The only tiny issue I had was the main character, Sarai, has the name name from a book written by Mercedes Lackeys, so every time I saw the name, it would jar me out of the story into another story. Both protagonists are strong young females, half-breeds, scorned for the color of their skin. This is probs my only tiny issue, and I might be the only person to have this, so don't listen to me. (^_^)

Overall, I would recommend this to anyone! I plan on re-reading it, as I miss the world already.
