Yahuah Bible: Restored Name King James Version Translation and Transliteration, by Daniel W Merrick PhD

Daniel Merrick at the age of 7 said the sinner's prayer and began reading his Bible every day. By the age of 8 Dan discovered many verses which said to call on and praise "His Holy Name", Dan questioned, "What is his Holy Name". Dan went to his pastor and asked that question "What is God's Name". The pastor's response was that the name was lost over time, to which Dan replied: "If God lost His name, I will help him find it". The YaHUaH Bible is the result of Dan's search of Paleo Hebrew phonetic that show the Hebrew roots of the Christian faith are embedded in many old testament prophesies. Designed for the Hebrew Roots of the Faith of the people of Israel with the Messianic restoration of the name of Elohim transliterated as YaHUaH from the tetragrammaton and God as YAH. A great addition to any sacred scriptures collection translated and tranliterated by Daniel W Merrick, PhD

Love the Holy Name! Just have a magnifying glass ready to read.
By Amazon Customer
I am glad someone got a holy name (Yahuah) bible published.
The notes at the beginning I really like, though only a few pages..could be more info.
The translation is good..good transliteration as well.
The main problem with the bible is it way to small..I mean even with perfect eyesight you will strain your eyes. I bought a magnifier sheet, which helps.
Great bible overall..just the layout and the print are least to be desired. I added tabs to find books.
Also..I got a bible case..this is a huge book..you will need XXL size..which fits it snug.

Very disappointed in this Bible
By Evelyn G. Jeri Carter
Very disappointed in this Bible; because for such a BIG BIBLE, the words are so small you can't read them and you can't tell when one chapter ends and another begin and as far as I can see there is just two names that are changed, I was looking for all the names of the people to have their names change to their Hebrew names, Very Disappointed

7 golden lampstands[a menorah], 13and in the midst of the 7 lampstands One like the Son of Adam, dressed in a robe down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band. 14And His head and hair were white as white wool, as snow, and His eyes as a flame of fire, 15and His feet like burnished brass, as if refined in a furnace , and His voice as the sound of many mayim. 16And in His right hand He held 7 stars, and out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His face was as the sun shining in its strength. 17And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead , and He placed His right hand on me, saying, “Do not be afraid, I am the First and the Last, 18and the living One. And I became dead, and see, I am living forever and ever. Amn. Jesus of Lubeck (Name of first Slave Ship to Grace the America’s.)

What has come to be referred to as “The Good Ship Jesus” was in fact the “Jesus of Lubeck,” a 700-ton ship purchased by King Henry VIII from the Hanseatic League, a merchant alliance between the cities of Hamburg and Lubeck in Germany. Twenty years after its purchase the ship, in disrepair, waslentto Sir John Hawkins by Queen Elizabeth.

Hawkins, a cousin of Sir Francis Drake, was granted permission from Queen Elizabeth for his first voyage in 1562. He was allowed to carry Africans to the Americas “with their own free consent” and he agreed to this condition. Hawkins had a reputation for being a religious man who required his crew to “serve God daily” and to love one another. Sir Francis Drake accompanied Hawkins on this voyage and subsequent others. Drake, was himself, devoutly religious. Services were held on board twice a day.

Off the coast of Africa, near Sierra Leone, Hawkins captured 300-500 slaves, mostly by plunderingPortugueseships, but also through violence and subterfuge promising Africans free land and riches in the new world. He sold most of the slaves in what is now known as the Dominican Republic. He returned home with a profit and ships laden with ivory, hides, and sugar. Thus began the slave trade.

Admiral, Slaver John Hawkins

Admiral John Hawkins is often remembered as one of the greatest men in the early English navy. Along with his cousin and companion Sir Francis Drake, he helped defeat the Spanish Armada and cement England’s role as ruler of the seas. But like most men who fell under the category of “Sea Dogs”, his career was filled with a blood-thirsty ruthlessness far removed from the modern ideas of heroes.

Act 22:14

14And he said, ‘The Aluah of our fathers has appointed you to know His desire, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear the voice from His mouth. 15Because you shall be His witness to all men of what you have seen and heard. 16And now, why do you delay? Rise up, be immersed, and wash away your sins, calling on the Name of YAHUAH

Gallipoli, by Peter Hart

One of the most famous battles in history, the WWI Gallipoli campaign began as a bold move by the British to capture Constantinople, but this definitive new history explains that from the initial landings--which ended with so much blood in the sea it could be seen from airplanes overhead--to the desperate attacks of early summer and the battle of attrition that followed, it was a tragic folly destined to fail from the start.

Gallipoli forced the young Winston Churchill from office, established Turkey's iconic founder Mustafa Kemal (better known as "Ataturk"), and marked Australia's emergence as a nation in its own right. Drawing on unpublished eyewitness accounts by individuals from all ranks--not only from Britain, Australia and New Zealand, but from Turkey and France as well--Peter Hart weaves first-hand stories into a vivid narrative of the battle and its aftermath. Hart, a historian with the Imperial War Museum and a battlefield tour guide at Gallipoli, provides a vivid, boots-on-the-ground account that brilliantly evokes the confusion of war, the horrors of combat, and the grim courage of the soldiers. He provides an astute, unflinching assessment of the leaders as well. He shows that the British invasion was doomed from the start, but he places particular blame on General Sir Ian Hamilton, whose misplaced optimism, over-complicated plans, and unwillingness to recognize the gravity of the situation essentially turned likely failure into complete disaster.

Capturing the sheer drama and bravery of the ferocious fighting, the chivalry demonstrated by individuals on both sides amid merciless wholesale slaughter, and the futility of the cause for which ordinary men fought with extraordinary courage and endurance--Gallipoli is a riveting account of a battle that continues to fascinate us close to a hundred years after the event.

Review

"[Peter Hart] has skillfully blended his analysis of the campaign with scores of personal accounts from both sides that fought at Gallipoli, and there are numerous maps to help readers better understand the progress of the fighting. Those who are interested in the First World War will find this a most compelling book, as we seek 'to resolve the conundrum of how somthing so stupid, so doomed from the outset, can remain so utterly fascinating.'" --Army History

"Gallipoli is replete with lengthy and compelling quotations by Australian, British, French and Turkish soldiers, most never before published. Hart's intimate familiarity with the battlefield, where he leads regular tours, adds a level of understanding absent from other books. Overall, Gallipoli is an important contribution to the growing literature on this epic and tragic campaign." --Edward G. Lengel, Military History

"The human element still defines this compelling account of an operation Hart dismisses as a 'lunacy that never could have succeeded,' driven by wishful thinking as opposed to the professional analysis of ends and means...He is at his best, however, in explaining and presenting the 'near-superhuman courage and endurance' of the combatants. That remains Gallipoli's enduring appeal." --Publishers Weekly

"An important reevaluation, largely from the Allied point of view. An excellent summary of an iconic campaign, offering many lessons for war planners." --Library Journal

"HERE is a marvellous, ghastly book...What makes Mr Hart's version so bracing is his method. He is a specialist in oral history at London's Imperial War Museum, and this book, like others he has written or co-written, gains richness and texture from the use of first-hand testimony." --The Economist

"This thorough updating of one of WWI's great 'might have beens' makes a good acquistion as we approach the centennial of the battle." --Booklist

"Macleod's Gallipoli is a valuable contribution to the sea of Gallipoli scholarship available. Her focus on the meaning of the campaign to the cultures of several of the participant nations is a much-needed scholarly approach to what is often an emotional discussion."-Richard Fulton, H-Net

A masterful anatomy of futile courage
By George A. Webster
`Gallipoli' is not the first time that Hart has been drawn to the disastrously conceived campaign of that name. He first put it under the microscope seventeen years ago in `Defeat At Gallipoli' , co-written with Nigel Steel. Since then, he has visited those fatal shores on several occasions leading battlefield tours. He tells us, indeed, that "Gallipoli will always be my primary interest in the Great War. I still love visiting the scenes of this most powerful of human dramas and long may that continue." In other words, here is an author who for the best part of twenty years has worked with and reflected upon the historical evidence for his subject as well as familiarising himself with the physical landscape upon which it was enacted. `Gallipoli' is the fully realised culmination of this investment of time and effort.

Hart sets out the scope of his book in his Preface. His purpose is to give an insight into what it was like to be a soldier at Gallipoli almost a century ago. This he achieves through his skilful selection of largely unpublished accounts from the men themselves. He's been weaving such eyewitness narratives into his books for long enough now to need no particular commendation from me as to how well he does this. But Hart's `Gallipoli' is an important book because of the context into which he places these fascinating first-person accounts. His overarching goal is to expose the futility of the campaign in which these individual experiences took place. This is achieved in two ways. Firstly, throughout the book Hart, himself a convinced `Westerner', looks at the Gallipoli adventure from the gimlet eyed perspective of the professional observers amongst the British High Command on the Western Front - the men who, rightly, remained convinced throughout the war that the only way to decisively win it was to beat the main German field army in the main theatre of the war. Hart never lets the reader forget that that was always going to be the Western Front, not the Dardanelles and that the latter was always a distraction from and a drain upon the former. Secondly, Hart guides us through the key battles of the Gallipoli campaign with a keen eye for the most tactically illuminating and less familiar episodes. In other words there is much that is new in this retelling of an oft-told tale.

Not the least of Hart's achievements in `Gallipoli' is to strike the right balance in according due prominence and recognition to each of the contingents of the truly international forces deployed there. Few military campaigns have spawned such legacies of national sentiment around the globe as Gallipoli. In Turkey and Australia and New Zealand in particular the epic of Gallipoli has become an essential component of the sinews of nationhood and a key element of the unifying myths which are essential to creating a sense of national identity in all countries. Yet whilst giving due recognition to these elements, and building the core of the story he unfolds around the British and ANZAC forces, Hart never loses sight of the important contributions of others. In particular, he makes the telling point that the part played by the French has usually received less than its due in English language accounts and that "it could be argued that they were the most effective fighting force at Gallipoli." Nor does he fall into the trap of portraying an Allied disaster as having more to do with bad luck than the skill and tenacious courage of their enemy. To this end Hart has introduced evidence from Turkish sources to give the reader a conception of the battle from their point of view. As he justly puts it, "they were, after all, the victors in 1915; the story they tell is one of equal heroism and superior military competence." Yet out of this broad picture of the seat of war and the various contingents engaged there, the stoic courage and bloody minded endurance of the losers never fails to impress the reader of the well-chosen and often moving accounts of the appalling situation which they found themselves in. The factual foundation stones of the ANZAC legend are safe in Hart's capable hands.

Peter Hart has an impressive enough back catalogue of Great War histories to his name which speak for themselves - almost literally, more often than not, due to his trademark use of unerringly apt quotations from the participants. Hart's skills, developed over thirty years of interviewing military veterans as the oral historian at the Imperial War Museum, are never less than evident in his selection of these verbatim quotes. Others, of course, have used similar techniques - Lyn MacDonald is one who springs immediately to mind. What takes Hart's work immeasurably beyond such cut and paste works, however, is the insight and authority of his linking narratives which place his eyewitness accounts firmly into their historical context. The wisdom of Hart's contextualisation and conclusions are what have earned him a reputation as a fine military historian. Whilst he is an unashamedly popular narrative historian, Hart's books always fully support his conclusions through their extensive source notes. In his `Gallipoli' we see the maturing of an historian at the top of his game. In this book the authoritative historical analysis and narrative into which the gem stones of the accounts of participants are set is even more extensive than in his previous works, giving Peter Hart's `Gallipoli' an immediate claim to be an essential title for anyone interested in what the author calls this "doomed but fascinating campaign." Recommended.

Gallipoli by Peter Hart
By JCS
Most of us that have been fortunate enough to visit the battlefields of Gallipoli know that one visit isn't enough. Gallipoli is the type of place that makes you return ... again and again. Similarly, not content with writing one book on the Gallipoli campaign, Peter Hart has written a second account of this ill-fated venture and we should be rightly thankful.

This new book uses completely new material to that found in his first book, "Defeat at Gallipoli", written with Nigel Steele and published in 1994.

Hart needs no introduction to the WW1 military history enthusiasts. His previous publications cover all three services and he is particularly noted for "The Somme", "1918: A Very British Victory" and "Aces Falling" (that formed the nucleus for the well received BBC Timewatch of the same name).

In case you didn't know, Peter Hart is the Oral Historian at the Imperial War Museum. His genre is to use first-hand accounts and weave them into incisive and frank campaign analysis, and very importantly, in a style that is easy to follow and fully understandable. "Gallipoli" is no different and is arguably Hart's best work yet.

Hart's theme is that the Gallipoli campaign was doomed from the outset and significantly averted war resources away from the critical war theatre of the Western Front. He begins by setting the political scene that led to the Naval and Army campaigns. We learn that the Turkish army that opposed the British forces were not an ill-disciplined rabble but professional, highly motivated troops, well led by subalterns and senior officers; the myth of Turkish machine guns confronting the Allied landings is skilfully and persuasively argued against. The different stages of the campaign are broken down into a series of chapters and together with the concise maps, Hart's descriptions of locations and places of combat could easily serve as a battlefield guide on location. As it happens, included at the back of the book is a guide to visiting Helles, ANZAC and Suvla - some people think of everything.

When I had finished Gallipoli it was difficult to decide what I liked best about Hart's new book but of course this accolade must be reserved for the first hand accounts that make this history book so vivid. Hart doesn't only interlace his authoritative narrative with British and ANZAC first-hand accounts, but also with those from the French, German and Turkish combatants as well. This isn't just another book on Gallipoli but is breaking new ground and encompassing the views of those from all the participating nations. Add to this, photos that I certainly haven't seen published before, plus the extensive list of references and sources, and you have the Must Have book for military enthusiasts for 2011.

Well done Peter Hart.

Gallipoli - An Essential Read
By J. Grundy
The Gallipoli campaign cannot be said to have been poorly served by historians. Indeed, this is the author's second work on the subject, the first, "Defeat at Gallipoli", was co-authored with Nigel Steel. However, this book makes a strong claim to adding much that is new to our understanding of what it meant to be a participant in the ill-fated Dardanelles adventure. And one that I would unhesitatingly recommend to anyone interested the subject.

The telling of history, particularly that concerning the Great War, has developed significantly in the past thirty years or so. The actions of great men and plans of campaign illustrated by broad arrows on a map have been largely overtaken by anecdotal accounts of the actual participants. Both approaches have their merits but weaknesses too. Detached accounts telling how this or that division or brigade moved an inch across a map pay little heed to the price paid by the men on the ground. Whilst the stories of the men themselves without the historical infrastructure on which to link the reality of war to how and why they came to be there in the first place leave the reader little the wiser. And Peter Hart again proves himself to be a master at combining the two traditions, complemented with his own informed and expertly articulated interpretation of events.

'Gallipoli' is written in the author's by now trademark style. The motivations and actions of those at the very top of the chain of command are outlined clearly and concisely, setting in context the experiences of those given the job of putting the lofty aims of the likes of Churchill into practice. But, and this was for me the stand out feature of this work, the author reminds us that the allied forces were not simply battling military incompetence, difficult terrain, a harsh climate and flies but well-led and very brave, professional Turkish soldiers. In addition, we are reminded of the French contribution to the campaign, one that has received little attention from English-speaking authors (and I suspect amongst French ones too). Indeed, Peter Hart goes so far as to argue that the French were the most effective military force on the allied side and given the hardest task, exposed as they were to fire from the Asiatic shore whilst tackling some of the toughest conditions found anywhere on the Peninsular.

The role of the French contingent might surprise many readers, as will, perhaps, the author's firm assertion at the very beginning of the book that the campaign was a forlorn hope from the start. Hart's contention is that politicians looking for a cheap alternative to taking on Germany on the Western Front did more than delude themselves, they wasted thousands of lives in the process. And the grand scheme to send aid to Russia via the Dardanelles is exposed as a complete fantasy. The irony that the British in 1915 lacked the very shells and artillery required to break the deadlock of trench warfare, either in France or Gallipoli, meaning there were none to spare for the Russians in the first place, is not lost.

Although this is the author's second visit to Gallipoli, the quotations from those involved are all new; their power will make an impact on the most avid reader of military history. As such, `Gallipoli' is another magnificent tribute by Peter Hart to the generation that fought the Great War. I am, as anyone might guess, an admirer of the author's work. But what is clear here and in his other works is that Peter Hart directs our admiration to those whose story he has so beautifully told. Highly recommended.

Strange the Dreamer, by Laini Taylor

A new epic fantasy by National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestselling author Laini Taylor of the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy.
The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way around--and Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. Since he was five years old he's been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it. Then a stunning opportunity presents itself, in the person of a hero called the Godslayer and a band of legendary warriors, and he has to seize his chance to lose his dream forever. What happened in Weep two hundred years ago to cut it off from the rest of the world? What exactly did the Godslayer slay that went by the name of god? And what is the mysterious problem he now seeks help in solving?
The answers await in Weep, but so do more mysteries--including the blue-skinned goddess who appears in Lazlo's dreams. How did he dream her before he knew she existed? and if all the gods are dead, why does she seem so real?
In this sweeping and breathtaking new novel by National Book Award finalist Laini Taylor, author of the New York Times bestselling Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy, the shadow of the past is as real as the ghosts who haunt the citadel of murdered gods. Fall into a mythical world of dread and wonder, moths and nightmares, love and carnage.
Welcome to Weep.

I'd just pause every few paragraphs to put the book down and sigh over how beautiful it was
By Michella (YA Books Girl)
I have finally composed myself, I think.

LAINI TAYLOR CONTINUES TO SHRED MY HEART.

Nope. Never mind. Not composed.
Will never be composed. What is life.

All right, SO. STRANGE THE DREAMER is phenomenal. Gorgeous, lush, magical, heartbreaking. It's The Laini Taylor Brand, okay. It's also the book I'll use to answer "If you were stranded on a desert island and had one book to read forever, what would it be?" I never actually thought I'd have an answer to this question. But while I was reading this, I'd just pause every few paragraphs to put the book down and sigh over how beautiful it was. Which is why my first night of reading, I got less than 30 pages into it.

"There were no books to hide behind, and no shadows--only Lazlo Strange in his worn gray robes, with his nose that had been broken by fairy tales, looking like the hero of no story ever told. Or. No story ever yet told."

This is a story for the dreamers, for the ones that look at the ocean and hope for a glimpse of Ariel or Nessie. For the ones who could spend a day with a book, and still be thinking about it when they finish the final page. For the lost ones, and the scared ones, and the broken ones. For the hopeful ones, for the shunned ones, for the weird ones.

This book is slow. Like, achingly slow. But broken Godslayer Eril-Fane, rebellious Ruby, clueless Feral, bookdragon Lazlo, sweetsweet Sparrow, blue gold hearted Sarai, twisted and bitter Minya, and so many others will wrestle your heart from you.

Happy book birthday STRANGE THE DREAMER. May you bring a little more magic and compassion into the world.

Luscious Prose & A Unique Fantasy World
By Hannah
Strange the Dreamer offers the same luscious and imaginative prose one can always anticipate from a novel written by Laini Taylor.

There's a considerable amount of foundational exposition and world building, as this is the first book in a new series, but the author finds a delicate balance between introducing readers to a new world with never-before-seen mythical creatures and delivering a complete story with a cast of intriguing characters. While Lazlo makes for a likable and refreshing protagonist, he's accompanied by a batch of equally alluring characters such as a tricky alchemist, a sage monk, a sly thief, and a blue-skinned goddess, to name a few.

This book is a mixed bag of everything readers want from an epic fantasy: magic and whimsy; a fresh take on supernatural abilities; a compelling mystery; an undeniable sense of exploration and adventure; a new realm of fantastical proportions, and a satisfying ending that sets the stage for more to come.

Locales are easy to visualize in one's mind, character motivations sing with truth, and the electric thrill of young love is portrayed with velvet language.

A dazzling start to an exhilarating new series, Strange the Dreamer offers beauty and wonder, magic and mysticism, monsters and gods.

Instant favorite!
By amy
Still trying to recover from this book hangover. The world that Laini Taylor creates is so submersive as to require some time to get your head back in the real world. In the best way possible. For the dreamers of the world, this is their lives, laid out before you, spun from wisps of their own reflections and emotions like cotton candy, in the most silky prose. Certain experiences, like realizing the rediculousness of a nightmare while IN the nightmare has been laid out, making you think, why yes, that's exactly how that happens. Knowing that people don't care for you, or your odd proliclivities, and not caring, but embracing your uniqueness, being triumphant in your knowledge of self worth. This is what this book detailed for me. This was a wonder, with great characters, great plot, great writing. Yes, it is slow. Did that bother me? Usually it would, but the quality of the writing had me savoring each page, rather than devouring it. Letting each sentence linger on my tongue, rather than gulp and frantically flip the page.

The only tiny issue I had was the main character, Sarai, has the name name from a book written by Mercedes Lackeys, so every time I saw the name, it would jar me out of the story into another story. Both protagonists are strong young females, half-breeds, scorned for the color of their skin. This is probs my only tiny issue, and I might be the only person to have this, so don't listen to me. (^_^)

Overall, I would recommend this to anyone! I plan on re-reading it, as I miss the world already.

From the Back Cover

CDMA, GSM, TDMA and PCS Satellite - all in one complete guidebook!

Four digital technologies — CDMA, GSM, TDMA and PCS Satellite — will dominate the marketplace for second-generation mobile and wireless networks. In this book, internationally respected telecommunications expert Uyless Black examines and compares all four, from the standpoint of the communications engineer and manager. You'll learn how each technology seeks to deliver improved clarity, reliability and speed. You'll also review every critical issue faced by engineers, network managers, and others involved in deploying these systems:

  • Engineering, architectural and real-world implementation challenges.
  • Capacity.
  • Data operations.
  • Roaming and security.
  • Interfaces, standards, and signaling systems.
  • Frequencies and frequency mapping.

Black clarifies the often-confusing terminology surrounding digital cellular and wireless services, and reviews the key differences between first- and second-generation networks. He presents detailed, up-to-the-minute coverage of the new GSM standard for North America; introduces new high-performance vocoders for digitizing and compressing voice signals; compares leading approaches to deploying Wireless Local Loop (WLL) technology; and previews third-generation mobile systems already on the horizon. Whatever your role in implementing wireless technology, you'll refer to this book constantly, for years to come.

A good introductory book on wireless communications systems
By Victor (szetov@hotmail.com)
A very good introductory book to the world of wireless network. It covers a number of popular cellular standards including IS-136, IS-95, GSM and the AMPS. However, not much material were devoted to the physical layer (i.e. modulation and coding).

From Uyless Black: Some ten years after writing technical books and receiving reviews on them, I've decided to respond to the input from readers. I should have done so sooner, but here it is now. You will now see this note placed on the comments for each book that is listed on this site, so don't bother re-reading. The note is the same for all the technical books.

The "pros" comments have dealt mainly with an easy to understand format. The "cons" comments have focused on the books (a) not being suited for college classes, (b) too many typos, and (c) mere recitations of ITU and Internet standards. There are other positive and negative comments, but these four points stand out.

The books were intended to be general references; general in relation to the topic itself. They were designed specifically to provide a relatively non-technical overview of ITU and Internet standards. They were used mostly by professionals who had degrees, and needed to (quickly) come to a general understanding of a set of standards. Afterwards, the readers could then go into the details of the standards themselves. Thus, my task was to distill many pages of highly detailed specifications into a few pages of summaries. One of the principal criticisms of the books was the very reason they were written.

I fault myself and my three publishers for not catching the typos, of which there are just too many. I was being asked by my publishers and my clients to hurry-up and get the next summary text out the door, as the clients' projects were beginning. That is why I wrote so many books in a short time. The technologies were coming out in rapid succession, and people did not have the time to read perhaps thousands of pages of standards. I did not take sufficient time to proof. But my publishers, sometimes with two to three proof readers---and at least one technical expert---reading a manuscript also dropped the ball.
I think my books provided a valuable service to my readers. My clients used them extensively, and I believe I was able to "short-cut" them to later read the details more efficiently. Nonetheless, in hindsight the books were insufficiently edited and written with too much haste.

I've been quite surprised that these books are still being sold. Not because they do not have merit, but that they are out-dated. The market for them does not come from the publishers, but from being on the used book market. My recommendation to you is not to buy technical books that are (sometimes) over ten years old.

One last point, which I hope you find humorous, perhaps ironic. Some readers compared some of my work unfavorably to an esteemed writer and lecturer. I read some his books. One contained a figure what was quite similar to a figure in one of my books; so similar in fact, that it included an error I had made in the figure. He did not source my figure, but led the reader to think it was his own creation----and his own error!

I would welcome any thoughts you might have. You can send them to Blackssteets@aol.com.

Classic Case Studies in Psychology: Third edition, by Geoff Rolls

The human mind is both extraordinary and compelling. But this is more than a collection of case studies; it is a selection of stories that illustrate some of the most extreme forms of human behaviour. From the leader who convinced his followers to kill themselves to the man who lost his memory; from the boy who was brought up as a girl to the woman with several personalities, Geoff Rolls illustrates some of the most fundamental tenets of psychology. Each case study has provided invaluable insights for scholars and researchers, and amazed the public at large. Several have been the inspiration for works of fiction, for example the story of Kim Peek, the real Rain Man.

This new edition features three new case studies, including the story of Charles Decker, who was tried for the attempted murder of two people but acquitted on the basis of a neurological condition, and Dorothy Martin, whose persisting belief in an impending alien invasion is an illuminating example of cognitive dissonance. In addition, each case study is contextualized with more typical behaviour, while the latest thinking in each sub-field is also discussed.

Classic Case Studies in Psychology is accessibly written and requires no prior knowledge of psychology, just an interest in the human condition. It is a book that will amaze, sometimes disturb, but above all enlighten its readers.

Review

"First published in 2005, this volume can be appreciated by a wide audience. Readers will appreciate the clarity of writing, appositive definitions, and the clear glossary. Historical and social contexts are vividly evoked. Many chapters include photos. A compelling textbook or reader for introductory, clinical, or history of psychology courses, the book should also be of significant interest to sociologists and historians. The third edition includes three new chapters. Summing Up: Recommended" - C. T. Fischer, emeritus, Duquesne University, USA, in CHOICE, July 2015

"This book gives a wonderful flavour of the wide variety of topics within psychology, and features some of the most well-known and influential case studies alongside those which have received less attention. Rolls demonstrates a deep understanding of his subject matter, and his clear style of presentation ensures the key aspects of each case study are covered in an accessible and engaging way without losing academic substance. I thought I was familiar with many of the case studies but I learned something new from each chapter and especially appreciated the unique focus on the personal stories of the people at the centre of each case study."– Dr Mandy Robbins, Glyndwr University and University of Warwick, UK

"This engaging new edition gives valuable insight into the lives and worlds of the famous names encountered by every student of psychology. It provides a greater context to the individual cases by illustrating their impact on psychology, and by explaining what happened to the individuals throughout the course of their lives." – Jamie Davies, Teacher of Psychology, Wyke Sixth Form College, Hull, UK, and editor of psychoblog

Neanderthal Man: In Search of Lost Genomes, by Svante Pääbo

ONE OF AMAZON'S TOP 100 BOOKS OF 2014

Neanderthal Man tells the story of geneticist Svante Pbo’s mission to answer this question: what can we learn from the genomes of our closest evolutionary relatives? Beginning with the study of DNA in Egyptian mummies in the early 1980s and culminating in the sequencing of the Neanderthal genome in 2010, Neanderthal Man describes the events, intrigues, failures, and triumphs of these scientifically rich years through the lens of the pioneer and inventor of the field of ancient DNA. We learn that Neanderthal genes offer a unique window into the lives of our hominid relatives and may hold the key to unlocking the mystery of why humans survived while Neanderthals went extinct. Pbo’s findings have not only redrawn our family tree, but recast the fundamentals of human history—the biological beginnings of fully modern Homo sapiens, the direct ancestors of all people alive today.

From Booklist
As Pbo tells it, sequencing the genome of Neanderthal man seems to have been about equally fascinating and frustrating. Fortunately, fascination predominated, and ultimate success was reported in 2010 and closely followed by the sequencing of another progenitor of modern humans. The frustration that dogged the project arose from the difficulty of finding Neanderthal fossils with enough DNA left in them to reconstruct the genome, and the constant need to expel contamination by modern human DNA, which, since it highly resembles Neanderthal DNA, routinely corrupts sequencing the latter. The tale Pbo tells is largely one of technological improvement enabling the elimination of contamination and speeding up the sequencing process. Secondarily, it’s about creating scientific foundations and multinational scientific cooperation to pursue the promises of research into ancient DNA, including that of nonhuman species as well as hominins. Although he never mentions it, Pbo is the acknowledged founder of ancient DNA research. Instead, he sparingly recounts his personal odyssey from homosexuality to marriage and fatherhood, without relating it to his work, which may perplex some readers. --Ray Olson

Review
“Neanderthal Man opens with this episode [when Pbo and his team first sequenced Neanderthal DNA], and it’s a nice touch by Pbo, bringing us straight to the moment when his long, painstaking effort to tease ancient DNA out of hominin fossils yielded its first dramatic results.”
—David Quammen, Harper's

“Pbo has provided us with a fabulous account of three decade of research into ancient DNA, culminating in 2010 with the publication of the Neanderthal genome.... Pbo’s book has to be compared to The Double Helix (1968), James Watson’s brilliant but controversial account of how the structure of DNA was discovered. When taken together they provide an insight into how bio-molecular science has both changed and remained much the same during the last half-century. Both are strong personal accounts of scientific discovery, exposing how science is driven as much by passion, ambition, and competition as by rational thought and the sharing of knowledge. In both books the reader is gripped by life stories of far greater interest than those in may novels before being plunged into passages of near-unintelligible science (despite much simplification) that are nevertheless strangely enthralling.”
—Steven Mithen, New York Review of Books

“This is the fascinating account of Svante Pbo’s efforts to sequence Neanderthal nuclear DNA.... [H]is personal story, from graduate to world-renowned scientist, make this a very enjoyable book.... The study of Neanderthals has kept palaeontologists occupied for more than a century, but Pbo convinces us that decoding their DNA will provide insights into how different we are from them and what makes us so unique.”
—BBC Focus

“[An] engaging book.... Neanderthal Man is devoted–and devoted is definitely the word–to the years-long ancient DNA project to sequence the Neanderthal genome. Pbo and his far-flung team did that to an accuracy that exceeds most of the contemporary genomes being sequenced today.... Before I read Neanderthal Man, I thought I knew something about contamination of ancient DNA. In fact, though, I had no clue. No matter how well informed you are about genetics, Svante Pbo will teach you things.”
—Tabitha Powledge, PLOS Blogs / On Science Blogs

“I came for the cavemen, but I stayed for the geeky nail-biter of a story about doing historic science in a climate of fierce international competition and rapid technological innovation.... Truth be told, DNA sequencing is pretty wonky stuff, but perhaps it’s Pbo’s own passionate investment in the undertaking that makes his story so exciting to read about; Neanderthal Man does for paleogenetics something like what Steven Spielberg did for the legislative process in Lincoln.... [T]his book is a vibrant testimonial to what might be the greatest creation of modern humans: the scientific method.”
—Laura Miller, Salon

“Much of Pbo’s book is devoted to the details of the difficulties [of extracting DNA from ancient bones], and how they were overcome by an awesome combination of technology, ingenuity and persistence. It’s a story of how modern high-concept science is done, shot through with the crackle of problem-solving and the hum of project tension, with occasional riffs of annoyance about major scientific journals and people who want dinosaur DNA.”
—The Independent (UK)

“[A]n excellent glimpse into how modern science proceeds as a global, social activity.... Pbo has to navigate through collaborators and competitors (including people who spend time in both categories), guardians of the bones he wants to grind into dust, touchy issues of nationalism, and more. In the process, he helps found a new research institute and builds a team dedicated to studying ancient DNA. If anyone doubts that science is a social activity, the doubt won’t survive reading this book.... Pbo paints a picture of how a major scientific advance rose out of a mix of politics, persuasion, careful management, and struggles with technology and technique. For that alone, it’s valuable.”
—Ars Technica

“If there is one name associated with ancient DNA, it is Svante Pbo.... Pbo pioneered and has largely led the field for the past three decades. His book, Neanderthal Man, is perfectly timed, beautifully written and required reading—it is a window onto the genesis of a whole new way of thinking.”
—Nature

“If Pbo weren’t such a good storyteller, the book might have bogged down with descriptions of things like the different techniques of polymerase chain reaction, and all it takes to build a clean lab. But he’s a clever enough writer to keep the reader’s attention with a fast-paced story and wonderful details.”
—23andMe blog

“This is a fascinating story of how modern science and especially computer technology is opening vistas onto our prehistoric history.”
—The Explorers Journal

“Pbo provides a fascinating look at how his personal life intersected with the founding of a scientific field that has revolutionized evolution.”
—Science News

“In Neanderthal Man, Svante Pbo offers readers a front-row seat to the still-unfolding understanding of this enigmatic human ancestor by recounting his own years of work.... Pbo quite candidly relays the doubts and challenges that accompanied more than a decade of discovery—a labor that elevated Neanderthals from troglodyte brutes inhabiting a dead-end branch of the human family tree to a complex species that interbred with other hominins, including Homo sapiens. Never one to shy away from provocative statements or even-more-provocative research, Pbo gives what appears to be an honest and open account of his pioneering studies of Neanderthal genetics.”
—The Scientist

“Evolutionary biologists are, general, pretty interesting people to talk to, but rarely would you describe their lives as thrilling. The notion of combining an autobiography with a popular science book may therefore not seem especially compelling. However, in this case both the author and the science are quite extraordinary, and inextricably linked.”
—Evening Standard (UK)

“Pbo’s tale describes a process approaching the Platonic Idea of contemporary science: a lot of very smart people collaboratively working their butts off, persisting through mistakes and failures and numbingly repetitive but essential tasks and political machinations and technological inadequacies because they believe the Truth is Out There. And finally finding it. Others have not yet weighed in, and this being top-level and therefore monumentally competitive science, contrarians may well emerge. But if the Neanderthal genome project was anything like what Pbo describes, we are damn lucky.”
—Tabitha Powledge, Genetic Literacy Project

“Pbo passionately chronicles his personal story, from graduate school through the culmination of the Neanderthal project 30 years later, and the scientific implications of this exciting research.... In accessible prose, Pbo presents the science so that laypersons will understand the nature and import of his work. But it’s his discussion of the scientific process that steals the show.... He discusses what it took to build a case tight enough to convince even the most skeptical of colleagues and he goes on to demonstrate that scientific knowledge is cumulative and ever-evolving.”
—Publishers Weekly, starred review

“[A] revealing glimpse into the inner workings of scientific research.... Since Neanderthals are our closest evolutionary relatives, the author’s work in decoding Neanderthal DNA gives scientists a way to understand how we differ genetically from them and offers the opportunity to learn what genetic changes have made humans unique on this planet.”
—Kirkus Reviews

"The tale Pbo tells is largely one of technological improvement enabling the elimination of contamination and speeding up the sequencing process. Secondarily, it’s about creating scientific foundations and multinational scientific cooperation to pursue the promises of research into ancient DNA, including that of nonhuman species as well as hominins.”
—Booklist

“It is a rare thing to read about an important development in science by its principal innovator, written in the spirit and style in which the research unfolded. Neanderthal Man is a dispatch from the front, and if you want to learn how real science is really done, I suggest you read it.”
—Edward O. Wilson, University Research Professor, Emeritus, Harvard University

“Svante Pbo’s Neanderthal Man is the incredible personal story of one man’s quest for our human origins using the latest genome sequence tools. Pbo takes us through his exciting journey to first extract DNA from ancient bones then sequence it to give us the first real glance at our human ancestors, and showing ultimately that early humans and Neanderthals interbred to produce modern humans. This is science at its best and reinforces that contained in each of our genomes is the history of humanity.”
—J. Craig Venter, Chairman and President, J. Craig Venter Institute

“Svante Pbo, a major architect in the study of paleo-DNA, has written a personal, insightful and sometimes very frank book about his relentless quest to understand the human family tree. The first scholar to extract genetic material from Neanderthals, Pbo writes candidly about the seemingly insurmountable trials and tribulations he had to overcome to give us intriguing new insights into human origins.”
—Donald Johanson, Founding Director of the Institute of Human Origins, Arizona State University, and author of Lucy: The Beginnings of Humankind

“Problem by problem, solution by solution, Pabo’s gripping account of the discovery of our relationship with Neanderthals brilliantly conveys the thrill and reality of today’s big science and the excitement of a major breakthrough.”
—Richard Wrangham, Professor of Biological Anthropology, Harvard University, and author of Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human

Decoding the genomes of our extinct relatives!
By Sam Santhosh
With the completion of the full human genome sequence in 2003 and the rapid fall in DNA sequencing costs over the subsequent 10 years, we have been awaiting major advancements in many fields such as Healthcare, Agriculture, Drug Discovery and so on. However, the progress has been slow and the deluge of genome sequence data has been a tough problem to handle.

But, Svante Paabo in this fascinating book on the 'Neanderthal Man' shows how the new technologies have enabled him to sequence the genomes of our extinct relatives - the Neanderthals and the Denisovans. The data proves how our ancestors moved out of Africa about 50,000 years back and interbred to a small extent (2 to 7% of our genes come from them) with the Neanderthals and Denisovans and maybe drove them to extinction. Many interesting facts come out of these studies such as, (a) that gene flow seems to have been from the Neanderthals to us (and not the other way), (b) the founding population of the Neanderthals also seems to have pretty small like in the case of the humans (c) we split from the Neanderthals about 500,000 years back (d) the Denisovans split about 1 million years back (e) the Denisovans seem to be closer to the Neanderthals than to humans, and much more...

The book is not only fun to read, but Paabo's detective mode of story telling will also keep the reader focused. By mixing his personal stories with scientific research, Paabo provides a refreshing frankness to the narrative. We get a direct view of the challenges in scientific research and how the role of institutional support and adequate funding can make research a success. Paabo's journey from Egyptian mummies to Mammoths, to Sloths and finally the Neanderthals and Denisovans is a great inspiration to all students of science. He shows how passion, perseverance, attention to detail, and collaboration can deliver results not only in Science but in all aspects of life.

Paabo explains the Science very clearly and the narrative shows us how he has become the world's expert in 'ancient DNA'. But in order to do that he often has to go into intricate details of lab work which some readers might find difficult to follow. Still it will not affect the story and if you are interested to learn how we became what we are, this is a book that you should not miss.

Great Read on Discovering "Old" DNA
By Dr. Terrence McGarty
The Neanderthal Man, by Svante, is a compelling recount by a principal in the discovery of genes of the Neanderthals. It starts with the interest in recovering DNA from old sources, and in this case some liver bought at the local market and then desiccated in an oven at 50C. The tale spans over some twenty years, with diversions typical of science, and ultimately ends with the publishing of some of the most interesting results in understanding man and his evolution.

Svante is an exceptionally good writer and the tale flows quite smoothly. If one understands the science, then one can fill in the gaps and the tales is well presented. If one does not understand the science then one can still appreciate what is happening by taking the results presented at face value.

The tale works back and forth from the fundamental science to the interrelationships between various players in the overall search. Svante shows how he managed to deal with the anthropologists and others to get samples of Neanderthals from as far away as Siberia. It also demonstrates some of the more cooperative nature of science as new techniques is shared and how Svante is assisted by many others who are but in related fields.

The efforts span from California to Eastern Russia and it shows that in today's environment the ability to communicate changed what would have been multi-lifetime efforts into a fast paced move to provide the final answers.

This book is a stark contrast to Watson's Double Helix. The Helix is a strong interplay of personalities; it portrays competitiveness and at times pettiness that is common in certain scientific endeavors. Helix was a true race, a sprint to get DNA right, and a succinct set of observations which became the underpinnings of Svante's efforts. Svante is the opposite of Watson. The ego is missing; the collegiality if present, yet one still sense the pace. Yet it is not a pace with an edge, it is a steady pace to get it right.

This is definitely a great book for those seeking to understand the Neanderthal developments as well as understanding perhaps how the research community has matured as it has expanded.

Also, upon some reflection, I recall when I first read Watson's Double Helix just after it was published I could recognize the highly competitive world of research since I was still at MIT. In contrast Svante portrays a totally different world, one more of communications and cooperation. The worlds of Watson and Svante are separated by some half century, and the difference is startling, one is near ruthless and the other collegial, with a sense of cooperation moving forward. Great job!

Best book on this sort of subject since 'The Double Helix'
By Patrick L. Boyle
Some commenters here were disappointed that this book is not about Neanderthals but rather about the process of decoding the Neanderthal genome. Sorry about that - I suggest you read another book.

This book has a chapter on dinosaurs too. There are no dinosaurs in that chapter and apparently there are no dinosaurs in amber either. Pbo explains why it's so hard to get nuclear or mitochondrial DNA from fossils 'only' tens of thousands of years old. We won't be making dinosaurs the way they did in Spielberg's movie. All that dinosaur DNA has long since degraded.

One of the single deepest insights this book presents is the problem of contamination. You find an ancient fossil that has human DNA in it, and you do a PCR on it, almost all of your results will be non-human. I think he found about 98% of all the DNA in one of his samples was from various forms of contamination. If a human bone is lying on the floor of a cave, every mouse, every centipede, every critter of any kind that crawls over it and every dust particle that falls on it also has DNA. So it's not surprising that laying on a dirty floor for 20,000 years contaminates your specimen.

This is really a book about the actual process of science. Pbo is a big success for a variety of reasons. Some intellectual - he's real smart - but also social. He seems to be a good supervisor and a good person. Good people want to work with him or for him. He is very far from being a recluse locked up alone in his lab. He goes to meetings and conferences around the world where he picks up contacts that help him later on. He seems to mix well with people from all walks of life. He is very non-nerdy.

At one point he reaches a crisis because he need five million dollars for some machine time on a new sequencer. Pbo writes of his dread of asking for so much money. I thought as I read this - this is real 'Big Science'. But then I thought - five million dollars isn't all that much. Almost any little solo Internet project that I dream up costs that much or more. In private industry I often had projects that size. In government I never had one that small.

The point is he only had a few people working with him and he had very little access to serious money yet this is the story of one of the biggest scientific breakthroughs in the last few decades. Science is a cottage enterprise. One wonders what would be possible if we were to 'scale up'.

Pbo himself is a little confusing. He goes out of his way to explain that he is a homosexual. But he's not a typical gay man. He has a wife and has had at least one kid. This is not the normal pattern. Pbo seems to be very mentally stable. I'm a little at a loss to understand all this.

Pbo names most of the people who have worked for him over the years. This is refreshing. Some academics attribute every discovery made in their lab to themselves personally. Pbo goes out of his way to apportion credit. This book should be required reading for grad students who want to get ahead. It's a primer on proper behavior for a modern scientist.
