About the Author
Lawrence S. Ritter (late) was Professor of Finance and Economics Emeritus at the Stern School of Business of New York University. A former Chief of the Domestic Research Division of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, he served as a consultant to the U.S. Treasury, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the American Bankers Association, the Association of Reserve City Bankers, and the Garvin Guy Butler Corporation. He was an editor of the Journal of Finance and was a past President of the American Finance Association. Professor Ritter was also the author of numerous articles in professional journals and of The Glory of Their Times, a best-selling book about the early days of baseball.

William L. Silber is the Marcus Nadler Professor of Finance and Economics and Director, Glucksman Institute for Research in Securities Markets at the Stern School of Business of New York University. A former Senior Staff Economist with the President’s Council of Economic Advisers and a former Senior Vice President at Lehman Brothers Kuhn Loeb, he has served as a consultant to the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the President’s Commission on Financial Structure and Regulation, the U.S. Senate Committee on the Budget, the House Committee on Banking and Financial Services, the Justice Department, the Federal Home Loan bank Board, the National Commission on Electronic Fund Transfers, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. He is on the Economic Advisory Panel of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and is the author of five books and numerous articles in professional journals.

Gregory F. Udell is the Bank One Chair of Banking and Finance at the Kelley School of Business of Indiana University. He was formerly a banker and commercial loan officer in Chicago specializing in lending to small and midsized Midwestern companies. Currently, his academic research focuses on banking and financial contracting. He has published numerous articles in academic journals including the Journal of Political Economy, the Journal of Financial Economics, the Journal of Monetary Economics, and the Journal of Business. He is an associate editor of six journals, including the Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking, the Journal of Banking and Finance, and the Journal of Financial Services Research. Never has the field of money, banking, and financial markets been more exciting. Financial innovation, deregulation, and geopolitical considerations have produced sweeping changes in the international financial landscape. By its very nature this is a big picture topic: an exploration of the institutions and markets that define the global financial system and how economic policy making influences these institutions and markets. A distinguishing feature of Principles of Money, Banking, and Financial Markets is making sophisticated concepts such as asset pricing, financial contracting, and rational expectations accessible to undergraduates. The tenth edition continues a tradition that readers have come to expect – a focus on modern analytical perspectives presented in a casual, conversational style.

New to this Edition

We have made a number of key changes in this tenth edition, beginning with Chapter 1. In addition to providing an overview of the entire text, the first chapter links the field of money, banking, and financial markets to specific careers so that readers can see the connection between the topics covered and life after graduation. Reflecting the dramatic changes that have recently become part of our daily news diet, we have introduced a new emphasis on the consolidation of the financial services industry. While this emphasis may be seen in many chapters, it is most evident in substantially revised sections of Chapter 11, The Nature of Financial Institutions, and Chapter 15, The Regulation of Markets and Institutions. New developments in global markets, including the Asian financial crisis and recent developments in the European Union (Chapter 10, Understanding Foreign Exchange), are also addressed in this edition. The recent revamping of the Federal Reserve's FOMC announcements has simplified the discussion of Fed policy in Chapter 22. Finally, as we discuss in detail below, new and exciting supplementary materials have been developed for the tenth edition.

Organization

Part I briefly introduces the role of money, markets, and institutions within the framework of the overall economy. Part II launches an intensive examination of financial instruments and markets, including an analysis of the level and structure of interest rates (Chapters 4 and 5), the pricing of risky assets (Chapter 7), and an overview of derivatives (Chapter 9) and foreign exchange (Chapter 10). We then turn in Part III to a discussion of financial institutions, including how asymmetric information explains the fundamental nature of financial intermediation (Chapter 11).

The focus in Part II on markets and in Part III on intermediaries sets the stage for our unique analysis of financial system architecture in Part IV. It begins with an analysis of how financial contracts address the information problems presented by small and large businesses (Chapter 14). This analysis explains why small firms are dependent on financial intermediaries for external financing while large firms have access to the publicly traded securities markets. This discussion sets up another distinguishing feature of our text: an examination of the regulatory structure of the United States that compares and contrasts the regulation of financial intermediaries and the regulation of the securities markets (Chapter 15). We then turn to an international comparison of financial system design that takes into account alternative regulatory structures (Chapter 16). Japan and Germany illustrate how intermediary-dominated systems work, while the United States and United Kingdom represent how markets-dominated systems function. We next look at financial innovation and how it can change a financial system (Chapter 17).

In the final two parts of the book, we return to the traditional macroeconomic framework as we consider the art of central banking (Part V) and monetary theory (Part VI). We have updated all of these chapters. The last chapter of the book (Chapter 30) ties everything together by showing how to combine observations on institutions, markets, and the overall economy to understand current financial sector developments, including the ups and downs of the stock and bond markets.

Exactly how you organize this course depends on what you want to accomplish. With this in mind, we have written the chapters so that for the most part they are self-contained, thereby permitting maximum flexibility. Nevertheless, the ordering of chapters reflects the fact that most instructors now teach a financial-markets and institutions-oriented course, with central banking as the backdrop. Thus, there are good reasons for following the book chapter by chapter, with omissions reflecting your own particular emphasis. For example, it is possible to omit Chapters 6 through 8 to avoid capital market theory and performance and to drop the discussion of derivatives in Chapter 9 without sacrificing continuity. On the other hand, Chapter 10 on foreign exchange should appear early in the course because international discussions are interspersed throughout the text. Similarly, for a course focused on monetary theory and policy, it is possible to jump to Part V (the art of central banking) and Part VI (monetary theory and policy) right after completing Part I and Chapters 4, 5, and 10 from Part II.

Pedagogical Aids

The text is augmented by a number of pedagogical aids that expand upon and clarify important topics. The chapters are liberally spiced with extracts from current articles in the financial press that highlight key issues. These appear as In the News boxes. Sometimes we like to take a deeper look at a topic mentioned in the text. We do so in a separate section labeled Off the Record. Sometimes we just can't contain ourselves and feel compelled to offer our own opinion in boxes called Going Out on a Limb. Finally, we offer straightforward, no-nonsense help in interpreting financial charts and tables in our Reading the Financial News boxes.

Each chapter concludes with a summary recapping the key points. A list of key terms follows the summary to help students with the language of money, banking, and financial markets. And we also provide a set of questions for each chapter that students can use to test their grasp of the material.

Overall this book was OK. It presented the key information in money and banking and the authors often made it entertaining to read. However the one major flaw with the book is the lack of ANY math. I know that some books are marketed for a more mathematical approach and thus contain more advanced mathematics accordingly. However this book had so little math it was laughable. I recall one section where the authors said "this can be proven mathematically, but for now just take our word for it..."

NO, I won't take your word for it, because knowing the underlying principals is to truly understanding anything.

The book arrived in the condition that I had ordered it to be - used. There was some physical damage to the book but it was still very much useable. It saved me quite a bit of money so the condition is to be expected. Essentially you get what you pay for.

I have been a victim of the yo-yo diet syndrome, losing weight from the latest fad type starvation diet, herbal supplements, etc., then gaining it back, why? Because I had never really changed my lifestyle or pursued a holistic and healthier way of living or developed good, continual exercise habits. I was usually too weak and tired from the latest diet I was on to even stick to any exercise plan or feel that great, other than seeing I was losing weight on the scale... that I inevitably gained back. I knew I had to find a way to get healthy, lose weight permanently and build positive eating and exercise habits.

I had read an article online about the Japanese way of Kaizen business management and how it could be applied to a complete lifestyle change and felt this would be a good way for me to achieve what I had failed to do so far, to take it in small steps. And doing a search for the Kaizen Method led me to this book. Practicing the Kaizen Method isn't difficult. I have learned to replace bad habits with good habits. To create goals. To use a notebook to track progress. To celebrate small successes. This isn't a diet and exercise book that overpromises and underdelivers, this is a new way to live, and a way that you can embrace as you see the results. There are many diet and healthy lifestyle books on Amazon and I've cruised through a lot of them and bought others in the past, but this book is definitely a winner and will make you feel like a winner, too.

Very practical!

Barbara Bingham, a dietitian and master certified life coach, introduces a simple but effective method to healthy living in her book The Kaizen Method to Living a Healthy Lifestyle. This does not fall in the category of the dozens of diet books that regurgitate the same ideas of weight loss and cardio fitness. Instead, it revolves around the Japanese philosophy of Kaizen. Kaizen means the practice of small, continuous improvement, and this book helps the reader focus on setting manageleble steps to develop new, healthier habits. The book is packed with practical, effective ideas-- such as keeping a notebook, writing positive thoughts, creating goals and milestones, and making lists that are doable. Bingham's beliefs that "intentional optimism" and holistic balance are the keys to good health are clearly evident in this book, and the reader cannot help but be carried by her enthusiasm. If you are a person looking for a "quick fix" to weight loss or you are searching for a traditional diet book, you probably don't need to pick this book up. If you are wanting to challenge yourself without stress, and if you want to reprogram your mind to become a more simple and conscientious person who takes their own health into their hands, The Kaizen Method to Living a Healthy Lifestyle might just be the answer you're looking for. Amazing!

I loved this when I read it on reddit originally. You have so many original ideas about zombies that work really well with the genre and the story as a whole. Eve is awesome.

My biggest criticism is the book isn't long enough and fleshed out enough. It was amazing, but felt a bit rushed. Ultimately, this is the sort of thing where you would write this first short book as a setup to a whole, complete, complex novel. It would be amazing if you expanded on the world and Eve returning as a human, maybe with some remaining zombie "advantages," like telepathy.

Please please please please please write a sequel. It was so good!

A revolutionary presentation on the chiropractic approach to pediatric care!

This textbook is an outstanding review of the rapidly expanding field of chiropractic pediatrics. A large population of parents are disturbed and frustrated by the contemporary medical management of functional childhood health problems (ear infections, immune system weaknesses, antibiotic-overuse, colic and bowel infirmities, scoliosis treatments, and the common head and neck, low back and hip, arm and leg pains so common in children). This book presents the finest offerings from the leaders in the chiropractic profession regarding the science of the management of childhood illnesses. The book comprehensively covers how to insightfully take a child's health history in order to more deeply understand the complete picture of the child upon examination. Thorough discussions of the issues regarding pregnancy -- its history and the meaning of the disturbances if there were problems -- are described in detail. Pediatric neurology and orthopedics are provided in detail, with excellent photographs and illustrations throughout. The chiropractic profession has developed specialized techniques for the treatment of specific and common pediatric problems which will make a great impression upon open-minded clinicians and researchers who work with childhood illness. Great Book- a theoretical engagement with the question of how Fascism is best studied comparatively. It contains essays by the key contributors to the field right now. Great introduction to the area, plus, interesting definition of Fascism by Iordachi, as inherently comparative...a key read.

Somewhat frustrating...

You were born on a spaceship traveling between two galaxies. You now can select which planet, and therefore which galaxy, you will now be a citizen of. Which planet will you go to? What adventures will you have in getting there? Will you find either of them?

No likely. Space is full of black holes, wars and hostile races. Will you give up your search and join the Universe Governing Body to try to bring peace to the galaxies? Or will you pick a side to fight on, joining in the wars? Will you travel in time, explore new worlds or go to school?

Most of the 44 possible endings seem to be your death or some vague ending without any real meaning. I'm surprised that, as a kid, I kept trying to find the endings I wanted.

In space no one can hear you sigh..

Space and Beyond (CYOA #4) by R.A. Montgomery. This is the first (and so far only) Choose Your Own Adventure book I didn't finish. It reads like dull gibberish from an aging hippie. I stopped reading after coming across my fifth ending of nonsense. The initial plot is that you have just turned 18 (in apparently 3 days and 2 hours) and must now choose your home planet for citizenship. You were born in space and can choose either your father's planet, with its troubled past and dying sun, or your mother's mysterious planet, also with a troubled past but a bright future. On my reading I had the chance to go back to the space academy for lessons, to command a starship, to become a research scientist, and to fight in a shadow vs light war. It sounds terribly exciting. But nothing really happens. And you have a friend follow you around who does so little the writer has to keep reminding you he's there. Now I'm just going to quote the endings I reached so you can fully appreciate the level of writing.

After being taught during a private lesson about the 'infinity of knowledge to explore within ourselves' I was given the choice to either travel to the era of dinosaurs or to some unknown point in the past. I chose the latter and on the next page got: "A chance to go to the unknown is probably really risky, but there is that desire in most people to take risks. You race back in time toward the edge of eternity, the beginning of the entire universe. You achieve an elastic weightlessness, and a sense of complete peace and calm. There is no sound, no light. But no darkness either. You race back to the very beginning, to the pulsating, exciting start. You return to the big bang that started the whole thing. You are and you have been a part of everything, always. The beginning is the end. THE END" Wasn't that fun!?

My next path lead me to investigating the cause of war by time traveling to a Mars in the past. Sounds exciting, right? After traveling back this is literally all there is: "When you arrive on Mars, you are invisible and can travel through space, through solid matter, and even into the thoughts of people. What is the cause of revolt on Mars? Who knows. Greed? Famine? Envy? Jealousy? Maybe just an instinctive need to battle, a basic drive to test and fight for the sheer sense of fighting. It's too complex. Everyone has a different answer. They all point to the other guy. All you know is that creatures get killed, cities get destroyed. What a way to live. That's why there is a new way- if only it will work. You are part of the new way, a way of sharing. THE END" What!? This 'way of sharing' hadn't been mentioned even once the entire story.

And if you join the side of the shadows, who are fighting against beings of light, you are given the choice to either be a ground soldier or a pilot. Both sound pretty exciting. And after choosing the latter this is all I got: "The rocket ship forces sound the most interesting, and besides, you are trained as a space pilot. Ground forces would be difficult for you. You are promoted to a command rank and put in charge of a large spacecraft with laser rocket weapons. From then on you are in space searching out and destroying alien ships. But you think to yourself, is this any kind of life, forever destroying things? Maybe you will quit. THE END" Why bother giving the reader lots of choices just to keep wrapping them up in one page philosophies. I'm not reading this for half-baked philosophies, I want adventure!

In the same shadows vs light war after choosing to retreat in battle as a soldier the next page reads: "Retreat is not always a bad thing. After all, you should go with what feels right. To fight now would only create further destruction. Enough damage has been done. Level off, give way. Let the other side realize what has been happening, too. As you retreat, the enemy seems to let up in amazement. The smoke clears, the noise stops. They retreat also. There is no more fighting. THE END" ...

And if I didn't retreat right away this was my other choice and ending: "There is a chance to get away. During a quiet moment, your group escapes to some remote hills far away from the battle area. Then something happens. The energy source for the lasers, the spacecrafts, the communications systems, mysteriously vanishes. There is no more energy except your own human energy. Weapons are useless. Radios and transporters are just pieces of metal and plastic. They are not working either. To survive now, you will have to hunt for food and support each other. THE END" I have no idea what happened. And I don't care. This is when I stopped reading. By the way, this page is accompanied by a picture of a caveman fighting a sabertooth tiger with a spear. It's a fine picture but seems like it's from another book. There are 44 (lousy) endings in 117 page book (including full page pictures).

The ONLY positives to this book are that there are a lot of choices, though they end up leading to gibberish, and the art by Paul Granger is pretty good. Unfortunately the art choices are kinda dull and/or small and few take advantage of the artist's skill for detailed drawings.
