Psychologist Gendlin (Behavioral Sciences, University of Chicago) comes from Carl Rogers's circle. Following Focusing (Everest House, 1978), this book shows how Gendlin's method of tapping the body's responses can be applied to the understanding and appreciation of one's dreams. He implies, rightly, that there are many ways of interpreting dreams, based on various theoretical approaches, each with its own validity. Yet, what really counts is the dreamer's somatic response to questions raised or interpretations suggested; the body has the answer, preverbally as it were. One can feel the author's respect for the privacy of the individual and for the message of one's inner nature. Simply and clearly written, this will be useful both for the lay public and therapists. About the Author
Eugene T. Gendlin, Ph.D. is Professor of Psychology at the University of Chicago. His work has been translated into more than seven languages. He was for many years the editor of Psychotherapy: Theory, Research, and Practice. In 1970, he was chosen by the Psychotherapy Division of hte American Psychological Association for their first "Distinguished Professional Psychologist of the Year" Award.

AWESOME!

This book is a fabulous read for people who are looking for tools that bring them closer to knowing themselves. It provides valuable insights and simple processes that allow us to explore the depths of our psyche. Probably not for the faint hearted, any self exploration needs committment, compassion and most importantly, trust. Trust that this book will open up a whole new world to your dreams, and the parts of yourself so far hidden or shy about emerging.
Do yourself a favour, and add this one to your bed side table.

Wow Great - The CD courses and lectures really drove home the technique

I have been working and reading about dreams for ages. This was a great addition to all the other books I have read (Jeremy Taylor, Robert Moss, Patricia Garfield, Karen Signell and Jean and Wallace Clift...etc). Once I read this I got interested in the body focusing technique which led me to Eugene Gendlin's and Ann Weiss Cornell's books. What really helped me bring it all together was buying the CD dream lectures and coursework that were available on line with Eugene's website and also a different collection of CD's about dreams offered on Ann Weiss Cornell's website. The course work really drove home the "how to". They seemed kind of pricey at $80-100/each but it was the best money I spent. It taught me "how to" for myself and others without being dependent on someone else. Side note: I have absolutely no affiliation with Ann or Eugene, but thought I would mention these other adjuncts because it took me about 8 months before I realized these CD's were available. I wish I had found these 15 years ago!

This book has excellent insights on the use of dreams. The writing is, however, poor, and much of it reads like transcripts from a workshop. If it were re-written, its value would be enormous.
