Now we're talking . . .

A great improvement over the first book.
Mr. Day has revised the work to address two problems - a certain lack of focus and a lack of suggestions for improvement. But he hasn't lost his wicked sense of humor!
It seems he is one of those rare authors who take constructive criticism intelligently and DO something about it.
This is truly an improved work and worth purchasing even if you have the original - he is even fair to the composers of some of the modern hymns (a genre that I personally detest).

Good book on how and why -- but not on educating young

This is a very informative book on how the Roman liturgy became so impoverished in the 20th century, especially with regards to music and choral and congregational singing. What was sorely lacking in my mind was no mention of how to education the young to rebuild music and especially singing in the church.

I liked this book a lot

I liked this book a lot. I think it has a lot of good insights into the Catholic culture and I like his ideas on how to go about changing the culture. I would like to see him flesh out his ideas in a more concrete way regarding suggestions on how to change the culture. This is definitely a book that music ministers should read!

Love this box set

Love this box set. I was considering buying the Death Note series in the "Black" editions which feature multiple volumes in one binding, but I am extremely pleased I chose this option. Having all 12 volumes is great for any collector, and the box is sleek and sturdy. The "how to read" (Volume 13) is great for anyone new to the series. My only critique (if it even is one) is that the little black pamphlet that comes with the set is a bit flimsy. Still, a must for any fan of the series.

L, do you know gods of death love apples?

This is one box set you NEED to own if you're going to collect manga. The Death Note series is among the best out there, and this collects the whole series in an attractive, compact box. For those of you who have already read through the series and are looking to buy, go ahead and buy it. You won't be disappointed. For those who haven't read through this series yet, I'll let you know why you should.

Death Note is about a role model high school student named Light Yagami, who is tired of living in a world filled with evil. Being the son of someone in the police force, he sees the failures of the justice system daily. Criminals fall through the cracks of the system, leaving them free to commit more crimes or to escape punishment for previous ones. During school one day, while going through all of this in his head, he notices a notebook outside of the classroom window. After picking it up and taking it home, he learns that it is a Death Note, a notebook that will kill someone if their name is written on its pages. He passes it off as a joke at first, but when the person whose name he writes in the notebook dies, he starts to use the notebook to further his goals of ridding the world of evil. Criminals start to die off one by one, all by heart attacks. The public is divided in their stance on the killings. Some people revere the killer as a hero, while others say the killer is nothing but a mass murderer. The killer comes to be known as "Kira". Law enforcement agencies scramble to find Kira, and when a genius detective, L, shows up on the scene, Light's wits are put to the test. How can someone prove he is a killer when all he uses is a notebook? How will he outwit L? It is here that the series turns into a clever game of cat and mouse.

Without spoiling anything, the series does have its flaws. The series takes a massive turn for the worse at the halfway point, but still manages to build up to a satisfying conclusion. Some of the characters could have used more dialogue, as the series is more about pushing the plot forward than building characters up (though it still does a good job). Some of the twists in the later half fall a bit flat, and the stakes are raised a bit too high too soon. Overall, though, these problems are far outshined by the positives. Death Note is a great thriller, with good characters, surprisingly good humor (given the dark tone of the story), and it even manages to address some real-world issues. What is justice? is it the laws we have in place now, or is it killing off all evildoers? What is considered a sin worth dying over? It manages to tackle these subject matters without getting preachy, and all the while keeping you interested past religious/political undertones. Honestly, this series is the definition of an instant classic, only bettered by the live action movies. $60-70 for this series is a steal. Why don't you own it yet?

Fantastic product for a fantastic price!
By That One Guy You Think You Might've Met Before
When I got this box set of the whole Death Note manga, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Never having read the manga or seen the anime before, I really didn't even have any specific expectations for this product to begin with. However, from the second I opened this box and rifled through its contents, I'm pretty sure it's safe to say that this has to be one of the best things I've ever bought here on Amazon.com. I'll go through some of the reasons why I consider this a great, no, a FANTASTIC buy and why you should get it if you're into Japanese manga, Death Note, or are just bored and would like something fun (and very entertaining, might I add) to read. Let's begin:

THE BOX: The set itself is a 5.5 x 10.2 x 9.1 inch, 6.8 pound (yes, I had to look that all up) box with a carrying handle on top. There are a pair of Velcro circles on top where you can open the box up in two folding sections and easily close it up again. When opened up, the inside is divided into 2 sections: a very large section for volumes 1-12 of the manga and the How to Use It booklet, and a small space for Death Note Vol. 13 - How to Read. There is just enough space for everything in here, so unless you have several books out of it at a time, you won't have to worry about anything falling over or getting jostled around when carrying it. Plus, being the size and weight it is, it isn't too bulky or heavy and should be quite suitable for traveling. Also, there's a lot of (what I presume to be) Obata's original artwork on the outside, which, in my opinion, is some of the best out there.

MANGA VOLUMES: All 12 volumes of Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata's addictive series are included in this box. Each volume is about 210 pages in length and, with the exception of volumes 1, 11, and 12, all contain 9 chapters of the total 108 in the series. Volume 1 only has 7 chapters while 11 and 12 each have 10. Within each of these volumes is a summary of what happened previously and a preview of what's to come in this volume, a table of contents for the chapters, the chapters themselves, and some of the obligatory advertisements at the end (and beginning, as well). As this is Japanese manga (translated to English, of course), the pages are both in black and white and read from right to left. The only exception to the "black-and-white" rule is the front/rear covers of each volume, which have beautifully colored illustrations drawn by the series' artist and co-owner, Mr. Takeshi Obata. Many people who enjoy anime/manga will admit that Death Note was their "starter" series, or the series that originally got them hooked on the genre in the first place, and this is perfectly understandable. On one hand, Mr. Obata's writing is brilliant and incredibly detailed. One of the things Death Note is famous for is its heavily dialogue, and the manga can definitely attest to that. Not only is there a lot of character-to-character dialogue, but a lot of focus on their thoughts and emotions, as well. The character development, dialogue, plotline, and other certain themes make the series come together in a most amazing manner and will definitely have you hooked by the end of the very first chapter. On the other hand, Mr. Obata's illustrations will amaze, thrill, and maybe even scare the hell out of you. It's not your typical manga drawings where you expect everything to look cartoon-ish and sort of like a comic; every panel is filled with mind-blowing, careful detail that almost makes everything appear realistic. As stated before, Mr. Obata is probably one of the best, most famous manga artists out there because of his skill and incredible attention to detail that few others in the world are able to match.

DEATH NOTE VOL. 13 - HOW TO READ: After having read the series, you may still have some questions or feel curious about certain aspects of the series, such as how it was started or how certain characters were created. Look no further than the 13th volume of Death Note, which is basically an encyclopedia database of the series. Slightly larger in height (maybe an inch or so) and pages (somewhere around 240-250, I imagine), this volume is filled to the brim with facts, opinions, and bonus content that will most likely help you understand and enjoy Death Note even more. Within this volume, you'll find character bios, interviews with co-creators Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, behind-the-scenes looks at creating the manga, fun trivia and facts you probably didn't know about yet, an extra chapter in the series, the Death Note pilot, and, probably the coolest thing in here, L's true name card tucked away behind the front cover in a cut-away section. It's definitely a really cool part of the series and a very fun addition to the box.

HOW TO USE IT BOOKLET: This is a bonus booklet that contains every rule of the Death Note notebook outlined in its pages. It's pretty small, but still fun to read if you need to catch up on your DN rules. Plus, unless you purchase this online separate from the box, you have a very slim chance, if no chance at all, of finding it in a retail bookstore, so consider it a bonus for getting the box set. ;)

PRICE: For just nearly $60, this complete set is basically a steal, and I'll explain why. If you purchase a single volume of this series online, it will probably cost you about $10. Get it at a bookstore and you'll probably spend at least $15 there. Altogether, if you bought every individual volume of the series, it will more than likely cost you somewhere between $130 and $200, depending on who and where you get them all from. Now consider this: by getting this box set for(about) $60 with everything previously mentioned included inside, you'll save at least 50%, if not more than that, from what you would if you got all of these separately. Really, if you're thinking about getting the complete series, there's really no logical reason why you shouldn't get this box set.

All in all, this is a great buy and a great deal, and if you're a fan of Death Note and want to complete your collection for the manga, THEN BUY THIS SET! I guarantee that you will NOT be disappointed!!! ;)

About the Author
Annie Proulx is the author of eight books, including the novel The Shipping News and the story collection Close Range. Her many honors include a Pulitzer Prize, a National Book Award, the Irish Times International Fiction Prize, and a PEN/Faulkner award. Her story “Brokeback Mountain,” which originally appeared in The New Yorker, was made into an Academy Award-winning film. Her most recent novel is Barkskins.�She lives in Seattle.

Larry McMurtry is the author of twenty-nine novels, including the Pulitzer Prize–winning Lonesome Dove, three memoirs, two collections of essays, and more than thirty screenplays. He lives in Archer City, Texas.

Diana Ossana has written two novels, more than a dozen screenplays and numerous essays.

An Impressive Short Story; An Equally Impressive Screenplay

Most professional writers regard short stories as a singularly difficult genre. The brevity involved requires a unique gift for precision, a gift that many authors lack. First published in 1997 in the New Yorker, as printed here Annie Proulx's story runs to slightly less than twenty eight pages; nonetheless, the story spans some twenty years and encompasses numerous and very vividly created characters--and it presents an unflinching tale.

Proulx's prose is quite stark in directness and drive, and she presents her story with a remarkable clarity and grace. Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist are two uneducated, itinerant ranch hands who meet when they are hired to tend sheep on Brokeback Mountain in the summer of 1963. Alone on the mountain, they begin a sexual relationship which they regard as 'just sex'--but which very quickly develops into a love which, given their backgrounds and era, neither can accept as such. When the summer ends, they go on to lives in the greater world, marriages, children, and all the things that a man is expected to do; even so, their need for each for each other will not be so casually dismissed, and in their failure to recognize it for what it is, and in society's refusal to allow them leaway, they will self-destruct in the most bitter way imaginable.

The short story received considerable attention in 1997, and it soon fell into the hands of screenwriter Diana Ossana, who in turn passed it to partner and Pulizter Prize-winning author Larry McMurtry. Recognizing the power of the story, the two acquired the rights to adapt the story into a screenplay. Many who read the screenplay praised it--but in truth, it raised more eyebrows than practical interest. Few producers were remotely interested in a script about gay men, much less gay men in a western setting.

In time, however, the screenplay came to the attention of film producer Michael Costigan and the details began to fall into place. Directed by Ang Lee and starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN began filming in 2004. Budgeted a fourteen million dollars, it was considered a "small" film that might do well in urban markets, at least well enough to make back its cost, but nothing more.

The film opened in limited release in December of 2005--and critical reception was astonishing. With so many accolades, a savvy marketing campaign was developed to place the film before an ever-expanding market, a host of Academy Award nominations further fueled interest, and within slightly less than three months $118 million dollars world wide. It was a truly astounding, truly unexpected reception.

While the Hollywood media machine has inevitably focused on the actors, critics have praised the script as an almost miraculous adaptation of the original story, and it is here published for the first time. Like the story itself, it is remarkable for fusion of sparse dialogue and unexpected poetry, and it reads extremely well. McMurtry and Ossana truly deserve the many critical accolades laid at their feet.

The short story and the screenplay are accompanied by three essays by Proulx, McMurtry, and Ossana. All are interesting in their own way, with McMurtry commenting on the issues that surround adaptation of literary material to the screen and Ossana focusing on the processes that eventually brought the script to the screen; the most interesting essay, however is by Proulx, who discusses her inspirations for the story and the sources from which the numerous ideas and images it contains arose.

The short story "Brokeback Mountain" is available in several editions, including a stand-alone printing and in Proulx's memorable collection of short fiction, CLOSE RANGE. I would personally recommend the latter--but if you are specifically interested in the screenplay as well, this is your chance. Recommended.

KINDLE SCRIPT WORTHLESS; original lines randomly cut and new lines mysteriously added

Kindle edition is a disgrace and completely inaccurate. Lines are missing from the articles and screenplay; new lines are added that never occurred in the original screenplay. This would be bad enough in a normal book but this is a script -- every word needs to be accurate; that's what people are buying it for. Contacted Kindle about it and they told me to fix it myself with the Kindle edit function... Really? That's what I'm paying ten bucks for? Smh.

SO INFORMATIVE HOW THIS SHORT STORY WAS TURNED INTO SUCH A GREAT SCREENPLAY (AND FILM)

First, I must say how much I loved BBM-the film. It effected me so much, I can't stop thinking of it. Powerful, heartbreaking love story. Direction, acting, etc., etc. superb. So very sad.
Now - the short story. I did find Ms. Proulx's original story just a tiny bit disappointing. It's so short!! And because I always had the images of the film before me and, of course, the images of the young and handsome Heath and Jake. But I am not denigrating the short story at all; I say this only because I found the descriptions of Ennis & Jack in the short story not as "handsome" as I thought they might have been. (Hope I made this clear)! But Ms. Proulx's essay at the end of the book gave me a much greater understanding of her sparse and concise writing.
Now - the screenplay. It is just great. For Mr. McMurtry and Ms. Ossana to take this short story, words off pages, flesh it all out, and turn it into such a great screenplay for film is just amazing. I weep at the fates of both Jack and Ennis; the fact of their not being together effects their entire lives and the other characters in their lives. So awfully sad.
And - Mr. McMurtry's and Ms. Ossana's essays at the end of the book are just as informative and satisfying.

About the Author
Maria Francisca Paredes Mendez is a native speaker from Spain and teaches Spanish at Western Washington University. Her doctorate focuses on Spanish literature from the 20th century. She is the author of the Temas and Plazas CD-ROMs.

Mark Harpring teaches Spanish at the University of Puget Sound. He is the author of the Mosaicos testing program and holds a Ph.D. in Nineteenth-Century Spanish literature.

Jose Ballesteros teaches at St. Mary's College of Maryland and his Ph.D. is on Golden Age Spanish literature.

About the Author
Having personally experienced six miscarriages, Kristy Parisi understands the pain and grief of losing an unborn child. She and her husband, Vincent, have been married for ten years, spending the majority of those years trying to start a family. Both Kristy and Vincent are former professional athletes who met while playing baseball/softball in Italy. Born and raised in Perth, Western Australia, Kristy now resides in Tampa, Florida, where Vincent grew up. She holds a master's degree in educational leadership from National Louis University.

Learn to cope, from an expert on the subject.

Miscarriage Mom is a very heartwarming book written by a true miscarriage warrior. The author has suffered from not just one or two losses (which may seem average for many couples in this situation), but an unspeakable six miscarriages. The bravery set forth by the author and her husband is remarkable. The book is an attempt to help others, and their loved ones who have experienced a loss due to miscarriage, cope with this insurmountable loss. The author and her husband both speak from a candid personal point of view sharing their sad journey of pregnancy losses and helpful suggestions on how to cope and how to move on with your life in a positive way. Many times when couples are suffering, they suffer in silence. According to the author, this may not be the best way to deal with it. The author shows compassion to others in her own way, as she has unfortunately become an expert on the subject. I highly recommend this book to readers and their loved ones who are trying to cope with this loss, whether it be a recent loss or a loss from the past.

As a friend of many amazing miscarriage mom's I wish I had this information sooner. Never again will they grieve alone.

This book not only provides advice for those that have just lost their Angel baby, but also advice for the family and friends of those who will help them through their loss.

Thank you for writing this insightful book. I will never forgot to be present and there during my friends time of need.

UPDATE 8: A BOOK RECOMMENDATION.

Since ending the Overnight Diet (you can read about my experience below), I have continued to read and experiment with different diet approaches. For those of you who are still struggling to lose weight, I'd like to recommend this book: Fat Loss The Truth by John Fitzgerald, available here on Amazon. This is not a diet book per se, but I found it to be one of the clearest, most direct and free of BS books I have read. It makes the path to weight loss extremely clear and utterly simple. You will be kicking yourself, as I did, for wasting time and money with all the other approaches. And, as far as I can tell, author is not selling any products.

UPDATE 7: SUMMARY OF OVERNIGHT DIET

This update is a summary of my three weeks on the Overnight Diet. My original review at the start of the diet, and the progress updates can be read below. During three full weeks on the Overnight Diet, I lost a total of 2.5 lbs. My prior diet was giving me slow but steady weight loss, and I decided to try the Overnight Diet because of its promise of rapid weight loss, up to 9 lbs. per week. I'm reducing my rating for this diet from 3 to 2 stars, simply because this diet didn't even come close to meeting its promise of rapid, significant weight loss for me.

I didn't reduce the rating further because I do think the diet is generally pretty healthy. It doesn't contain any extreme aspects that would be hard to sustain, other than what I personally consider somewhat extreme protein requirements.

I've given a lot of thought to this diet, and the reasons why I may not have lost any significant weight on it. My conclusion is this: I didn't lose weight because the diet requires eating more calories than I was eating previously on a 1000-1200 calorie nutrient-dense diet. In the end, I'm forced to conclude that there isn't any magic in the high protein and the smoothies required by this diet -- it, like any diet, is mainly a question of calories in and calories out.

Every time I get hooked by some new diet twist I get excited that this might be the one! I'm sure many of you have been there. I haven't taken the time to figure out the approximate daily calories in this diet, but I've done a lot of calorie counting, and I would estimate that this diet has you eating in the neighborhood of 1500 to 2000 calories per day. If you are currently consuming significantly more than that, then you would would lose weight if you followed the diet exactly. However, if you are consuming approximately that amount, or less, as I was, you will not lose weight. In fact, you may gain weight.

I'll be resuming my previous diet, and I wish all you dieters out there loads of encouragement - and don't give up!!

ORIGINAL REVIEW WITH UPDATES:

The three stars are based on having read the book, but just starting the diet, and will have to wait and see about the results. I will update the review later, based on the results.

The PROS:

The diet seems healthy, not overly restrictive, has plenty of variety, and the recipes sound tasty. It seems like a style of eating that could be sustained over time, with self discipline. Like most diets, it does have a required exercise component.

The quantities of allowed foods are generous, and it does seem like one wouldn't get hungry on this diet.

You don't have to count calories.

The CONS:

Even though the author has tried to make the plan easy to follow, there is a fair amount of complexity to actually making a plan for the week, shopping for all the ingredients, following the recipes, and preparing them. To implement the plan fully seems like it would require spending most of the day in the kitchen, something I would find not doable. I found myself spending a lot of time trying to distill the information into a compact form that I could take to the market with me. I also spent time trying to understand the basic proportions of the different requirements so that I can make up my own dishes without having to follow the recipes, because following the recipes increases the workload and complexity quite a bit.

I'm very skeptical of the author's claim that one can lose 9 pounds per week on this diet (granted, she hedges this claim by saying "up to" 9 pounds, which means that any amount of weight loss would qualify as falling within the claim). However, the 9 pound claim is the "hook" for getting us to buy this book, so I'll be disappointed if I'm burned yet again.

Finally, another "hook" to make us buy the book is the promise of no restrictions on types of foods one can eat. Actually, there are quite a few restrictions. And although the author's website shows a photograph of a dinner plate with a generous heap of pasta, for foods like pasta or oatmeal, the actual portion sizes are 1/2 cup, hardly even worth preparing.

I do wish there was a video available for the exercise. I find it very difficult to try to do exercises from a book, while I am twisted into a pretzel and try to read the moves at the same time.

The QUESTION MARKS:

The diet is based on a very high amount of protein, every day, in every meal, for life. In my case, it is two or thee times the amount of protein I'm accustomed to eating. I don't know how healthy this is over time. There seem to be a lot of conflicting studies on this subject.

I'm also concerned about the cost of this diet, as it is based on very large daily amounts of expensive meats, poultry and fish (soy products for vegetarians). The protein in dairy or legumes cannot be counted towards the daily protein requirement in this diet. This is disappointing, as legumes, for example, have the combined qualities of good protein, low fat, high fiber, and low cost. For example, the only beef cuts permitted are Flank Steak ("London Broil"), Round Steak, and Beef Tenderloin ("Filet Mignon"). Since flank and round steak both take hours of prep time, that only leaves beef tenderloin if you just want to cook a quick steak. Since this cut costs anywhere from $16 to $20 per pound, this would have to be an occasional treat for most people. The author actually gives a recipe that calls for an entire beef tenderloin, which would probably cost at least $100 - something few would ever do in their lifetime.

So that is my summary for now. I intend to give it a try, and plan to follow the diet to the letter; otherwise my results would be inconclusive. I'm getting my shopping list together, and will update in a couple of weeks.

UPDATE 1:

Ok, it's only been one day, but thought I would let you know that after the first all-smoothie day, followed to the letter, I have lost 0.6 lbs overnight. That's a pretty far cry from the "lose 2 lbs. overnight" claimed by the author. Why am I not surprised?

UPDATE 2:

Unfortunately, only five days into the diet it's bad news. After a small amount of weight loss the first couple of days, the trend reversed and I found myself gaining weight. The reason couldn't be more obvious to me -- all those excessive pounds of meat are sitting in my digestive system like a ton of bricks. I normally have totally regular digestion, because I eat loads of high fiber vegetables anyway, but this diet has me completely constipated. Yuk, and now I have to figure out what to do about it. Today I'm taking a break and eating lightly and drinking lots of water. I don't want to give up yet, but its clear that the amounts of protein are too much for me. Tomorrow, if my digestion has improved, I plan to carry on, but reducing the author's amount of protein by 30% and see how that goes. I don't know, the author seems to think these huge quantities of protein are normal and healthy, but right from the beginning I felt heavy and bloated and had trouble contemplating yet another slab of meat at the next meal. And I like meat! Her spaghetti sauce recipe calls for a full 1/2 pound of beef per serving!! Just thinking about it makes me feel ill, but that could be due to the 3 or 4 pounds of meat stuck in my intestines right now. I should mention that I have followed the diet to the letter.

UPDATE 3:

It has been one full week since I started the Overnight Diet, and today is my second smoothie day. I had to take a couple of light eating days (lots of vegetable soup and water) in order to get over the nasty bout of constipation caused by all that protein. My plan for the coming week is to continue the diet, with one change - reducing the meat protein by 30%. That means instead of the 90 daily grams of meat protein prescribed by the author, I'm going to stick with about 60 grams, which is more than adequate protein intake. Keep in mind that the author only counts meat protein (or soy) towards the total protein intake. This completely ignores all the protein you get from dairy, legumes and grains, all of which contain quite a bit of protein. So even eating 60 grams of meat protein, I know that I'm getting quite a bit more than that from non-fat yogurt, non-fat milk, whole grain bread, legumes, etc. Keep in mind that the diet does restrict the amounts of these other foods.

Ok, now the bad news. From the morning of the first smoothie day, to the morning of the second smoothie day (one week) I have lost 1.6 pounds. I'm sure that those of you who bought the book, like me, were attracted like flies to the promise of losing "up to" 9 pounds per week. Don't think anything like that is going to happen. I'm going to stick with it for another week before making any further judgements. One problem with this diet, and most others, is their tendency to prescribe a single solution for everyone, ignoring the reality of so many different body types, different metabolisms, different dietary needs. I don't seem to be able to tolerate as much meat as is prescribed, but someone else may do just fine with it. I realize it's difficult for anyone reading my review to come to any conclusion for themselves.

UPDATE 4:

This update is just to let you know about a couple of tips for making the planning and shopping easier. For me, I spent the most time up front trying to extract and simplify the essential information from the book, which I managed to distill to a couple of short lists. I ended up with 2 stapled sheets of paper that contain everything needed to do the diet. I can take these to the market and leave them on the kitchen counter for reference. Most of the rest of the book is background, recipes, etc.

My option has been to do this diet using mostly my own familiar foods and ingredients, rather than trying to follow the recipes in the book. They do look good, and I'll probably try some, but following the recipes adds a lot of time, complexity and expense. Once you have distilled the essential information about the diet, using your own foods becomes simple. So, if you want, you can use the following information.

1. PROTEIN FOODS YOU CAN EAT. In the book you will find a list called "Protein Sources That Count Towards Your DPR For The 6-Day Fuel Up." For this diet, these are the ONLY protein sources that count towards your daily total. I reduced this list to the protein sources I would most likely eat, and made a chart listing these foods, and their protein content in 1, 3, and 6 ounces. I got the numbers from an excellent resource - NutritionData dot com. [Sorry, this review won't let me format the text, but you can copy it into Word or Excel and format it there.]

- Beef Tenderloin: 8g protein in 1oz, 24g protein in 3oz, 48g protein in 6oz
- Chicken Breast: 9g protein in 1oz, 27g protein in 3oz, 54g protein in 6oz
- Turkey Breast: 5g protein in 1oz, 15g protein in 3oz, 30g protein in 6oz
- Salmon Filet: 6g protein in 1oz, 18g protein in 3oz, 36g protein in 6oz
- Tuna, in Water: 7g protein in 1oz, 21g protein in 3oz, 42g protein in 6oz
- Pork Loin: 8g protein in 1oz, 24g protein in 3oz, 48g protein in 6oz
- Egg, 1 Whole: 6g protein in 1 egg, 18g protein in 3 eggs, 36g protein in 6 eggs
- Jarrow Protein Powder: 18g protein in 1 scoop, 36g in 2 scoops

2. NON-PROTEIN FOODS YOU CAN EAT. This is the list of optional foods and their daily restrictions:
- Unlimited non-starchy vegetables.
- Unlimited fruit.
- 1 cup starchy vegetables (corn, potatoes, yams, winter squash, legumes).
- 2-3 servings (according to label) of 100% whole grains: oats, rye, wheat, etc., in the form of bread, cereals, crackers.
- 1-2 cups of non-fat or 1% dairy: yogurt, milk, cottage cheese, etc.
- Up to 4 teaspoons of high-MUFA fats: olive oil, avocado, olive oil mayo, nuts, seeds.
- 1 glass wine.
- Sweeteners: Splenda, Stevia.

3. Copy the author's list of whole-grain serving sizes.

4. Finally, I made a little protein counting spreadsheet that I keep open in a corner of my computer desktop. It simply lists Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and Other. The second column has a cell for putting in the protein count for each meal, and a total at the bottom. It's just a quick way to keep track. The next morning I clear the counts and start again. You could just as easily do this on paper.

That's all there is to it: For each meal choose one food from the PROTEIN list, in amount of about 1/3 of your daily protein requirement. Augment with any foods you want from the NON-PROTEIN list, making sure to stay within the daily limits. This is not how the author describes her program; it is my interpretation of how to do the diet simply, using your own familiar foods, rather than following the author's recipes. I believe it represents an accurate distillation of the author's program. Plus the exercise. And the smoothie days. You'll still want to read the book to understand the author's rationale for her program, and to learn how much protein you need to consume daily.

UPDATE 5:

This update is to offer my impressions of the Physicians Protein Smoothies that the author sells as an alternative to the homemade smoothie recipes in the book. I ordered a few to try out, and did so on my third smoothie day, day before yesterday. So, these ready-made smoothies pose a new puzzle: they are half the size (or less) and half the calories (or less) than the home-made smoothies in the book. The Physicians Protein Smoothies are only 160 calories, including the flavor packet. In drinking three of these in one day, you will consume a total of 480 calories that day. So, consuming next to nothing, I wasn't too surprised that the next morning I found I had lost 1.2 lbs. The trouble for me is, that after resuming the normal diet the following day, I gained that pound right back.

The ready-made smoothies, being much smaller in quantity, by early evening (the witching hour for the night time munchies) I was very hungry and it was a struggle to not cave in and have something to eat. As for the flavors, they are pleasant and very mild - kind of nondescript. You could probably punch them up a bit by adding some cinnamon or other flavorings. The smoothies have a sort of pudding-like texture that I found a little odd. I tried adding ice to the blender to reduce this. Adding ice also bulks up the apparent quantity, so you feel like you're having a little more than you really are.

I just don't understand the discrepancy between the ready made and homemade smoothies in terms of quantity and calories. The author seems to equate them.

So far, after two weeks on the diet, I've lost about 2 lbs., so about a pound a week.

UPDATE 6:

Yesterday was my 4th smoothie day, and the completion of three full weeks on the diet. I lost about 1/2 lb. this past week, bringing the total weight lost in three weeks to about 2.5 lbs. At this point I feel that I've given the diet a fair trial, and will probably not continue, as my prior diet was giving me better results. See my UPDATE 7 at the top of this review for an overall summary.

Make up your own menus!

To all the people who have complained that the menus given in the book are too complicated and involve too much shopping, preparation, and cooking; I say make up your own menus. The 28 day menu is simply a guide. Every day you will have around 14 ounces of protein...give or take a few, 2-3 breads, 2 lowfat milks, 4 teaspoons of fat, unlimited fruit, and lots of vegetables. Also, up to 1 cup of starchy vegetables a day...as in butternut squash, peas, corn, mashed potato. This is so do-able! Construct your meals with the foods that you like, and are used to eating. Have two boiled eggs, a slice of toast with Smart Balance margarine, and a piece of fruit for breakfast, for example. Then a sandwich with 4 oz. of turkey, lettuce and tomato, a teaspoon of mayo, a glass of lowfat milk, a piece a fruit. And so on. I have just started, and on day one I began with the banana latte smoothie. I was hungry again in a very short time, so I knew that the One Day Power Up concept would not work for me. I am trying the diet without the smoothies, using real food.... no outlandish recipes, no black beans, miso, farro, ahi, swiss chard, or tofu.

I had been on an extreme exercise/diet regimen for six weeks and gained 2 pounds. I started The Overnight Diet a week ago and I've lost 6 pounds! I am never hungry! Some helpful hints: for those complaining of constipation, eat more fruits and vegetables and increase water intake. For those feeling it is difficult because of the complex and expensive recipes, just plan your food intake based on a typical meal. I made myself a little chart that has the serving requirements. If I eat a slice of bread, some protein, fat,dairy, I check it off. then I have a visual of what I can eat. This is totally easy and effective. Dont make it harder than it is. I couldn't be happier. I love stepping on the scale everyday and watching the pounds disappear. It's hard to believe, based on the quantity of food I'm eating.

About the Author
Gerald Graff, a professor of English and education at the University of Illinois at Chicago and 2008 president of the Modern Language Association of America, has had a major impact on teachers through such books as Professing Literature: An Institutional History, Beyond the Culture Wars: How Teaching the Conflicts Can Revitalize American Education, and Clueless in Academe: How Schooling Obscures the Life of the Mind.

Cathy Birkenstein is a lecturer in English at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has published essays on writing in College English, and, with Gerald Graff in The Chronicle of Higher Education, Academe, and College Composition and Communication.

Russel Durst, who edited the readings in "They Say / I Say" with Readings, is head of the English Department at the University of Cincinnati, where he teaches courses in composition, writing pedagogy and research, English linguistics, and the Hebrew bible as literature. A past president of the National Conference on Research in Language and Literacy, he is the author of several books, including Collision Course: Conflict, Negotiation, and Learning in College Composition.

Fantastic approach to teaching persuasive writing

I received this book too late to use it for my persuasive writing class. While I had moderate success with my other book, Everything's an Argument, I would certainly use this book if I had to do it all over again.

They Say/I Say is a short book with a simple premise -- it correctly states that no argument occurs in a vacuum, but must depend upon what others have to say about it. Moreover, the authors believe one of the principle difficulties which students have with persuasive writing is an inability to correctly utilize these necessary ingredients (introduce what others have to say on the subject, and then present their own voice on the matter). Though I am not a writing teacher, I have found this to be the case in my classes.

TSIS summarizes the important aspects of this conversation in persuasive writing and provides templates for students to summarize what others say, introduce their own points, and perform various other techniques. While one may think the use of such templates leads to formulaic writing, the authors suggest the opposite is the case. By understanding how to shape their ideas, students can learn to better express their orginal thoughts, thus making their writing more individual.

While I am inclined to agree, TSIS is not perfect. It certainly cannot be used as a thorough textbook on all persuasive writing, nor am I completely convinced that the exercises provided in the book are the most effective at using the templates in student writing. If teachers can get students to incorporate the ideas of TSIS into student's writing, however, they will accomplish much. Check it out for yourself.

Excellent book, good price

I teach composition/rhetoric at a two-year college and I have required the previous (second) edition of this book for a couple years.

I chose this text initially because, unlike a lot of composition texts, the writing voice in TS/IS is very personable, easy to follow, and unpretentious. It occasionally shows a nerdy sense of humor which, surprisingly, my students don't seem to mind.

The book addresses issues that I wish I had been taught as an undergrad, like "saying why it matters," or even the concept of "they say/I say" itself, which looks at how to take empty, boring writing, and put it in context so readers are interested in it. Instead of lecturing about the same tired old essay structure, the book approaches the task like a personal quest: make yourself clear, be interesting, and have integrity as a writer. Anything it omits or only touches on, like MLA style or research tips, can easily be supplemented.

The publisher's price on the second edition (without the readings, many of which can be found online anyway) remains an affordable $25. And I was pleased to see this new third edition also at $25 (on the Norton site, anyway). The price allows me to pair this required text with another inexpensive book on style to capture the more technical side of writing.

My only disappointment is that while TS/IS is FINALLY available as an e-book in the new third edition, it is limited in platform, and comes with this disclaimer: "Our eBooks are Flash based and will not work on the iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, and some Android devices."

So... my students can buy the cheaper e-book for only $15, but they can't view them on the majority of personal devices, which chips away a little at the advantages of the e-book in the first place.

Overall, though, the quality of the advice, content, and style in this book are still better than most texts I've worked with, so I will stick with it for the new year.

My Ivy League mentor impressed by improvements I made using tips from this book

I am in a Ph.D. program at Cornell University, but having already completed an undergrad and a Master's degree, I thought my writing was pretty good. However, after using the tips from this book, my Ivy League professor told me my work had substantially improved. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their writing. I also recommend "Making Sense in the Life Sciences: A Student's Guide to Writing and Research" for anyone looking to help organize lots of information into a logical flow/argument.
