First published in 1981, this feminist classic began modestly as an academic essay on Emily Dickinson's love poems and letters to her future sister-in-law, Sue Gilbert. In her original introduction, Faderman recalled her surprise at finding these records of an erotic attachment between women that showed no evidence of guilt, anxiety, or the need for secrecy. Yet 60 or 70 years after they were written, the original letters had been bowdlerized by a niece of Dickinson's, who clearly found them too shocking for publication. Why, Faderman wondered, was passionate love between women, once almost universally applauded in the Western world, now almost universally condemned? She learned that the love between Dickinson and Gilbert had many precedents, and that it was only in the late 19th century that medical literature and antifeminism combined to rank women who loved women "somewhere," as she puts it bluntly, "between necrophiliacs and those who had sex with chickens." For this new edition, Faderman explains that she has resisted the urge to update her text, hoping that her exploration of romantic friendship, from French libertine literature through the dawn of feminism through the lesbian panic of the 1920s will still serve as "solace and ammunition" for those hoping to find "a usable past." --Regina Marler

About the Author

Lillian Faderman is a professor of English at California State University, Fresno, author of several books, and the winner of the 1992 Lambda Literary Editor's Choice Award and the Lambda Literary Award for Best Lesbian/Gay Anthology. She lives in Fresno, California.

A text for women who are "wondering"

Recently I was asked for a list of books for "an adult who is just beginning to explore whether or not they may be bi or lesbian". As someone who went through this many, many years ago and has written extensively on this topic, Faderman's book was one of the first that came to mind.

As individuals exploring our own sexuality - regardless of what that is - gaining historical context and perspective is a critical part of self-discovery. This is not the only book I'd recommend and it has a scholarly aspect which borders on clinical for a woman (or man or other) on the road to self-discovery.

I cannot count how many copies of this book I have purchased over the years, highlighting various passages which held out special meaning or purpose for me, and passed on to others. In the end, we all have our own paths and Ms. Faderman's book manages to cross most of them.

For those on a personal path, or those looking to understand the concerns and needs of a loved one trying to understand their place as a lesbian and bisexual in today's world, this is an excellent text for reading and gaining historical perspective. Bravo to Ms. Faderman for not 'updating' a historical text but letting her original research prevail.

Within the next 200 years, these finishing shops were also producing glass both cut and with details engraved into the surface. Another technique, wheel-cutting glass, was also practiced by the Romans and their contemporaries, the Sasanians, in Iran and Iraq. However, with the fall of the Roman Empire in the fifth century A.D. these methods all declined and eventually disappeared from the Mediterranean but were sustained in Western Asia. By the eighth and ninth centuries, both cutting and scratch engraving were part of the thriving repertoire of glassmakers in the central Islamic lands. In the extensive collection of cut and engraved glass presented in this volume, almost all the ornaments date between the eighth and eleventh centuries and trace their origin to present-day Egypt, Iraq, and Iran. The collection includes dishes, bowls, cups beakers, goblets, jars, pitchers, and ewers that have been newly cleaned and restored and show prevailing themes of plants, birds, and scenes from daily life. Together with an essay by David Whitehouse, executive director and curator of Ancient and Islamic Glass at The Corning Museum of Glass, this volume serves to illuminate and add to the study of the techniques and evolution of ancient glass in the Middle East.

specialist publication about Islamic glass collection

This is the first of 3 volumes detailing the collection of Islamic glass in the Corning Museum of Glass. It documents 595 objects and fragments produced in the Islamic world between the eighth and eleventh centuries. As a publication it is beautifully and luxuriously presented. Each item is excellently photographed in color and described by David Whitehouse, the executive director of the Corning Museum. As such it would deserve a 5 star rating for glass specialists.

I approached this book as someone interested in glass objects, but hardly as any particular expert. Given that the aim of these volumes is to comprehensively catalogue a large collection, is is understandable that every piece be included. Thus apart from complete (a small minority) or reconstructed items (much more common), there are many items (around 300) that are small glass fragments or parts of a whole piece. While the fragments are of some value for their designs, the average glass enthusiast would find them of relatively little interest.

Examination of the Khalili Islamic glass collection catalog (expensive but superb) and the Al-Sabah catalog (cheaper but well printed) demonstrates high quality pieces that are in better condition and many that are unbroken. Very few fragments are published in these two volumes.

In summary, this is a beautifully presented and printed book about a renowned collection that would be an obligatory purchase for the glass specialist. The generalist would possibly hesitate the outlay of funds.

A superbly illustrated, 432-page, coffee-table book formatted compendium, "Islamic Glass in The Corning Museum of Glass" is expertly compiled by David Whitehouse and is the first of a planned trilogy showcasing the Corning Museum collection of early Islamic glass art and artifacts. A representation that is as informed and informed as it is visually impressive, "Islamic Glass" is a seminal work that will provide an excellent introduction to what the Islamic culture and artisans were able to accomplish by way of paradoxically fragile and enduring art form. One of the BEST books on the subject available

I have been a 1911 aficionado for over 50 years and have accumulated all of the major books and manuals on the subject over the years. I recently purchased Walt Kuleck's excellent book on the 1911 and found it to be simply outstanding. It covers all aspects of the 1911 from history, maintenance, cleaning and lubrication, trouble-shooting, magazines, upgrades, holsters, ammunition, and shooting. Well illustrated throughout with excellent photographs, it is simply an excellent book for anyone interested in the M1911 pistols. Definitely a 5-STAR book.

Truly the Best Book on the 1911

I've bought several books on the 1911 and read articles on it magazines. This book is simply superb for providing an excellent, detailed, history of the development of the 1911 and the various modifications it underwent. It provides excellent detailed photos on how to detail strip it, and how to shoot it. This is simply, in my opinion, the best all-round book on the 1911 pistol and platform.

This is absolutely a great book on the Colt Model 1911. It's jam-packed with useful info on just about every topic you could ask or want to know about these fabulous pistols. Model numbers , ammunition , shooting , holsters, upgrades ,magazines , disassemble , assembly ,sights , maintenance , operation & more ! Even history & selection. Also the small size makes it handy to take to the range. The print is a decent size throughout , a very useful & handy reference manual for the 1911 owner. I highly recommend this book , " THANKS WALTER " 5 STARS !

The use of the same sensors for automatic track (train or “cab”) control is described for turnaround loops and wyes, for the prevention of following- and opposing-train collisions, and for non-derailing at improperly positioned turnouts. Also covered is the application of these concepts in a Digital Command Control context. DIY Advanced Model Railroad Signaling Electronics assumes a very modest knowledge of electronics, or alternatively, the ability to interpret a schematic diagram and solder simple, highly economical components on a hobbyist’s circuit board. About the Author
J. Richard (Dick) Kerr holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, and is a retired infrared, laser, and avionics systems engineer. He has authored over 60 scientific and engineering papers, and has been granted 10 patents. During his career he has been a professor, Graduate School president, engineering manager, and entrepreneur. Starting with an early childhood interest in model railroading, Dick has been fascinated with the idea of providing truly realistic, automatic signal operation that far exceeds the capabilities of commercially available toy train and scale model commercial units. Having (partially) retired, he has spent much of his time fleshing out these ideas in great detail, including testing on his own model train layouts. Many years have passed since the first motivation for these concepts, and he hopes that their final exposition will bring pleasure to- and stimulate the creativity of – others in this challenging and timeless hobby.

About the Author
Dr. Werner W.K. Hoeger Professor Emeritus in the Department of Kinesiology at Boise State University, and Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and the Research Consortium of SHAPE America (Society of Health and Physical Educators). The 2004 recipient of the Presidential Award for Research and Scholarship in the College of Education at Boise State University, keynote speaker at the VII Iberoamerican Congress of Sports Medicine and Applied Sciences and the 2010 Western Society for Kinesiology and Wellness, Dr. Hoeger continues to research and lecture on exercise physiology, physical fitness, and wellness. In addition to PRINCIPLES AND LABS FOR PHYSICAL FITNESS, Dr. Hoeger has published several Cengage Learning texts including Fitness and Wellness, Principles and Labs for Physical Fitness, Lifetime Physical Fitness and Wellness, Wellness: Guidelines for a Healthy Lifestyle, and Water Aerobics for Fitness and Wellness. Dr. Hoeger is a former luge athlete (2002 and 2006 Winter Olympian); All-American by USA Track & Field in 2012, 2014, 2015, and 2016; and renowned fitness and wellness innovator. He developed many popular fitness assessment tools in use today, such as the modified sit and reach, total body rotation, shoulder rotation, muscular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and soda pop coordination tests.

Sharon A. Hoeger is Vice President of Fitness & Wellness, Inc. in Boise, Idaho, and holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from Brigham Young University. Everyone should read this book in conjunction with a fitness class! If you have any medical problems associated with obesity, then this book will help provide insight. There are no "magical" cures or weight loss pills, programs that will work except for the "tried and true" hard work of healthy eating habits and exercise as described in this book. The self-tests in this book give you an excellent assessment of your health and even predict how long you may live depending on how you live now. People pay hundreds of dollars to see nutritionists, personal trainers and health care providers who follow the recommendations in this book. I am an RN and this helped fill the gaps in my education as well as help me lose weight (body fat) and has pointed me in the direction of a healthy life-style. I often refer to this book for guidance.

I got this for school but I ended up using it on my own! It's very informative on nutrition, diet, healthy lifestyles and how the body works, but my favorite part of it is the stretches and excersizes it has in it. The diagrams and pictures for stretches and excersizes are very resourceful, and even give you alternative options to common stretches that are better on your body. It also contains a lot of fitness and wellness evaluations and physical tests you can perform to evaluate yours health. If you read this book front to back and followed it's advice, you would be very knowledgeable and very healthy! Worth the buy if you are interested in keeping a good resource for the science behind nutrition and wellness.

I am so disappointed when I received this book. Some of the pages were missing especially the lab part. I had to buy an ebook version online just to print the lab I needed for the class. What a waste of money. This was sold to me by fastbook6.
