Good Book!!

The Author was my instructor and the book was required for the class. Unfortunately I had to drop the class and didn't get past the second chapter. From what I got out of it just perusing throught the rest of the book, seemed like it had a lot of good tips. The author is a very knowledable writer. I would recommend it not just for college students, but High school student (Junior and/or Senior) english classes.

About the Author
Eddie Gibbs is senior professor in the School of Intercultural Studies at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, and a senior adviser to the Brehm Center for Worship, Theology and the Arts. His seminars for church leaders about leadership in the emerging church have been held in the United Kingdom, Denmark, Norway, Australia, South Africa and around the United States. Gibbs has also written several books, including Good News Is for Sharing, Ten Growing Churches, In Name Only, ChurchNext, LeadershipNext and (with Ryan Bolger) Emerging Churches.

If you are a leader over 35, this book should be on your reading list.

To echo what was said in my title, if you are a leader over the age of 35, LeadershipNext by Eddie Gibbs should be on your reading list for the sake of your development, and for the sanity of the potential leaders that are in their twenty-somethings. As a leader in my mid-twenties, I genuinely sense that I am misunderstood with many of my comments, values, and outlook whenever I dialogue with older leaders. When I say "older" leaders, I do mean anyone that is over the age of 35. That may sound like a crass threshold to establish, but the reality is, the continuous change of our culture means that the rate of information is forming (almost more than ever) the emerging generation.

Please, if you are a Christian leader or pastor that wants to understand leadership for the next generation NOW, then read this book. It has somewhat of a scholarly bent to it, but it is an enjoyable read and will deeply challenge your thinking and the potential "unlearnings" that you may need to embark on moving into the 21st century.

Eddie Gibbs continues to be authentic after writing Church Next. Chapter one sets the pace for redefining what leadership is. He consistently compares the secular and church images concluding that they are the same, at least from first impressions. A further comparison that carries a strong theme in most chapters is the defining of words. The secular image of `charismatic' is an over bloated ego but in the world of church is a gifted leader in the Holy Spirit. Another consistent method used throughout the book is comparing leaders of yesterday with today. It appears that the risk takers of yesterday have become the conservative non-risk takers of today - hence the title Leadership next.

He continues in chapter two provoking the reader that leadership styles must change. Gibbs covers three areas that are `signs' to the `times' we live in. From economic developments, demographic changes and the age of information he concludes that these are major reasons for styles of leadership to change. All three areas affect every culture therefore become relevant to his thought. There is a slight assumption that everyone is, or will be at some point, thinking like a postmodern. I found this a little ambiguous. There are some cultures that exist on tradition and repetition rather than forward thinking thought. Gibbs does not give this much attention in his book. If anything, he assumed that all under thirty-five's are shaped by postmodernism. Although this may be true for white America it cannot be true for Latino, Asian, African American or Native American cultures.

Following chapters tackle the difficult issues of network and hierarchies leadership styles and traits. He does draw up excellent characteristics of a Christian leader than can be transposed into any culture. I felt this needed expounding a little more. What became apparent as I read further into the book was his passion to recover missional leadership in missional churches. He addresses the `transaction' leadership of keeping the organization in check and running rather than a fluid movement in keeping with original biblical practice.

His emphasis on connecting in teams and empowering the individual to operate within a team but keep their authenticity is an excellent thought, but tough to practice. Coupled with this is an excellent chapter on facing the cost of leadership. This particularly caught my attention within my own ministry context. Surviving criticism should be a compulsory class for every emerging leader for the missional church! Gibbs correctly states that a leader cannot escape criticism. Enduring loneliness is a subject many authors do not address that Gibbs has fully embraced. His biblical examples of King David paint a clear picture of a leader who will accomplish an assignment from God with personal cost. His conclusion is an inviting one of leaving a legacy using Jesus as the ultimate model that has survived and thrived for over two thousand years. He correctly states that there is a difference between success and fruitfulness. Leaving a legacy for the next generation of leaders is certainly a fruitful ideal.

Seriously wonderful book about leadership. Written from a Christian perspective for Christian leaders, but with wonderful information even for secular leaders. Highly recommended.

I had to read this for a seminary course and was not looking forward to it. Lots of little nuggets of biblical wisdom and proverbial truth. Beyond merely being about leadership this book helped me with a greater understanding of the Holy Trinity and the concept of koinonia (more than fellowship - fellowship in the gospel). Great read. Highly recommended.

For Leaders: Adapt and Endure

The book is exceptionally well named and, as always from this author, well written. From the always-important perspective of forward-thinking data project leadership, it closes the loop on agile data warehousing at enterprise scale. Books from others have introduced agile dimensional modeling, mapped agile terminology from application development to business intelligence, or defined new, agile enterprise data warehouse architecture in detail. However, this book, which is targeted to project leaders, describes, with sufficient detail for the target reader, how the most challenging, most agile-resistant pieces of data warehousing -- the data structure itself (data model), ETL coding, testing, and change management – are logically broken down into agile-sized, requirements-scoped chunks of business value while completely avoiding data silos, sustaining an enterprise-wide perspective, and as a big bonus, maximizing adaptability to future change and easy enhancement. Friend, you are not dreaming. Following this method, the scope-creep that inevitably followed traditional best practices, from agile requirements to the very non-agile big data-model design up front, becomes a thing of the past.

HYPER NORMAL MODELS: Known to insiders as Data Vault, the methodology is aptly explained at the level of, if you will, the detail oriented project leader or enterprise architect (vs. a data modeler or engineer) seeking a deep immersion for assessment and implementation oversight. Accordingly, the book describes a cross section of architectural alternatives as the method has evolved in Europe, the U.S., and the land down-under. Among these pathways, two important ones that received less coverage than others in this work are Business Vault and Data Vault 2.0 (DV2).

Business Vault, a layer just-downstream containing rules-based transformed data, either as views or tables, has continued to evolve, as it needed to, such that it actually does provide a nicely standardized method for querying the tables once they are loaded into Hyper Normal structure, either for direct querying or in order to subsequently load a data presentation layer. Those who found writing queries directly from a hyper normal model, and especially those getting started as data modelers or ETL engineers, will benefit greatly from learning more about Business Vault patterns.

Data Vault 2.0 is an innovation in Data Vault, intended to move it from primarily a data modeling methodology into a more modern data warehouse logical architecture that supports increased data loading parallelization and a more loosely-coupled integration with Big Data, in which huge data velocity or volume demands an absolute minimum of target table dependencies. The book “Building a Scalable Data Warehouse with Data Vault 2.0”, by Dan Linstedt and Michael Olschimke covers this innovation with the consistency, the detail, and the excellence that it deserves.
However, in my view, it is THIS book by Hughes that provides that all important data project leadership perspective for a data project leadership framework, if you will. Readers of this book who are intrigued with DV2, and who want to succinct, powerful 'how to' on DV2, should look into Kent Graziano’s “Better Data Modeling: An Introduction to Agile Data Engineering Using Data Vault 2.0” (Kindle), which is a near-perfect complement to this one, guiding data modelers and engineers seeking detailed ‘how to’ on DV2 patterns.

Moreover, this book I'm reviewing now has, in my view, the best top-down (project leadership framework) perspective to date on this exciting methodology. Hughes knows how to communicate and make it not just pallatable, but actually compelling.

HYPER GENERAL MODELS: The author also provides a fine introduction to a methodology for transforming source data directly, running it through a commercial transformation engine, then essentially loading it into dimensions and facts -- a proprietary methodology that is described as being available only through a single business intelligence platform vendor. The method, as I read it, does not simply rely, as I had expected it might, on the clever use of well-known table-generalization, aka ‘Universal Data Model’ principles, with their generalized ‘sub-type / super-type’ tables that, as a very high level explanation, reduce the number of tables essentially by storing records of varying concepts in a single table. Notwithstanding the author’s solid coverage of the hyper-general concepts, his indication -- that the commercial platform that actually executes it leaves some of these logical layers of hyper-generalization away from view from designers using the product – leaves me a bit concerned. However, since I have not used the commercial platform, I will not comment on it further, except to say that this author’s explanation of this intriguing platform was excellent.

Practitioners who fail to understand the insights offered in this book – instead sticking with either the old practice of big-enterprise-design-up-front, or the tactical (requirements driven) design, or no design approach of the inexperienced -- will find that their solutions are too slow to adapt to business change in modern times and will soon gather dust. Data warehouse project leaders who read this book and implement its guidance will know how to keep their solutions, careers, and teams dust-free. Recommended reading.

If you want to know about real world Agile Data Warehousing, this is the book to read!

"Agile" is a hot topic these days, but when it comes to data warehousing, being agile is easy to say, but hard to do. Data warehouse projects often get mired down in trying to answer every question that could possibly be asked, rather than answering the questions that are most critical to the business. Ralph makes a great case in this book for a more business value based approach and provides some solid evidence that traditional tool sets have failed to provide the flexibility required. His presentation of the “hyper generalization” approach is very compelling, both in terms of business value and time/cost savings. Nobody knows this area better than Ralph!

I've seen Ralph present this material in person at TDWI, and he's exactly right. 60% to 90% of the labor we currently invest in EDWs today could be eliminated through methods described in this book. I particularly liked this discussion of how alternative data modeling techniques can enable agile delivery methods, and I thought the "hyper generalization" approach he presented had particularly large potential for the data warehouse automation space. Recommend!

Second book please.

Awesome book! Hopefully there is going to be a second book. Frantz is the most underrated talent ever! Novak is so lucky to have the close friends that he does. Sadly I have seen to many people die before realizing that. If I was a religious man I'd pray for Novak. But I'm not so all I can do is set back and watch from a public distance. It's strange following Cky as a band and the crew all these years. Watching, reading and occasionally meeting them us as fans sometimes feel like we are friends already. It's a weird connection and creepy at the same time. Like when I meet one if them I know a lot about them and they have no clue who I im obviously. It's got to be strange on there end. We are fortunate that deep down under all the shenanigans there is some extremely great talent and there able to use that talent and create entertaining things for us to watch listen to and read. I'm a charm wearing old school member of the alliance. Everyday I wear my Cky and � charm. It's sad though. The "good ole days" are gone. There will never be a young Dunn pissing in dicos face in Iceland again. The greatest of that era has passed and I'm just so happy to of been if just for a fan part of it. Traveling 14 hours to see Cky play a Halloween show with 7 guys in a pickup. Then when we get there rake let's like 15 people go back to his house to sleep and hangout for 2 days, awesome groups of guys. Hopefully we get a second book soon.

A beautiful outlook on the junkie lifestyle.

I read this book while in a 30-day treatment center, I had had it for about 6 months before I just never picked it up. I've never done any hard drugs, but there were kids in there that had being doing them for nearly their whole life. I let 2 others borrow the book and they agree, this book is a must buy, especially since there is talk of a sequel.

If there is only ONE book you read this year this should BE IT. No I am not pimping out the book because of monetary gain etc al. Brandon Novak is a regular guy, a son, a friend a person... and his book is not sugar coated or full of governmental propaganda etc. It is a TRUE diary, journal, walk in my shoes BOOK!! Joe Frantz and him created a no holds real true and some times difficult to read account of ONE young mans journey into the life or lack their of dealing with Heroin Addiction...

Dont Judge A Book by Its Cover

I received this as a gift from my husband, since he knows how much I like Tim Burton's movies he thought this would be a good book for my collection. Well he wasn't wrong, since I started reading this book I wasnt able to put it down. It tells you all the movies Tim Burton started to Direct, Produce and participate in since he graduated from school up to Alice in Wonderland. Each chapter gives you detailed experiences from Mr Burton perspective. I couldnt ask for more, this is one of the best books I have read.

I ordered this as a gift for my sister in law, an avid fan. My daughter is 7 and she loves it!

Not only does my daughter love this book, but her teacher wanted to see it and loves it too. It's an excellent book for allowing a child to be able to find out how to spell a word by themselves. And since they do the work of actually looking up the word, it reinforces the spelling that much more within their minds.

There are several pages of useful information on how to spell words and on how to use the book effectively. My daughter has read parts of this and has learned much about spelling. It has improved her spelling abilities in school (she now gets 106% on her tests) and made her more self-reliant, which is important to me.

I'd recommend getting this book and Merriam Webster Children's Dictionary together, as one is good for looking up spelling, and the other is a great reference for definitions.

Editor: User-friendly for kids

My three children love this book already and can use it to look up words. Great spelling tips at the front of the book make this a reference book they can carry around with them and pull out for homework, letter writing, reports, etc. semi-glossy color pages make this book inviting and friendlier than mom's big clunky dictionary. As a magazine editor, I want my kids to make friends with my big dictionary in time, but this little gem makes it easier to use a dictionary to look up words they don't know how to spell.
