PreS-Gr 2—Roger the Rabbit cannot fall asleep. His father has nodded off, as have his siblings. His mother suggests that she and Roger take a walk to visit Uncle Yawn, "who was the world's kindest wizard and who lived just on the other side of the meadow." Written with a specific language pattern based on psychological techniques, this rather verbose picture book offers harried and desperate parents the promise of a magical story that will soothe their children to sleep, while offering relaxation and mindfulness techniques to help children take control of their thoughts and prepare for slumber. The artwork is mediocre and does not enhance the text. But according to the author's note in the front of the book, the artwork matters little; Ehrlin tells parents that "it is best if the child is lying down while listening, instead of looking at the pictures, so that he or she can relax even more." Ultimately, the book is instructional and didactic, specifically written for children who experience great difficulty winding down at the end of the day. I just heard about the book and ordered the hardcopy.
A short while later I was informed by my spouse that my two little ones were still up and amped for their first day of school (tomorrow), so I added the Kindle version and downloaded it for immediate help.
Note: Reading on an iPad in a dark room created its own distraction. Not recommended. I'll use this version when we travel and use the hardcopy at home.
The book has you insert your child's name in, so I used the more active and harder-to-sleep one's name.
The forward suggests that it might take a few reads to get the pattern down and warns of unusual phrasings in the book which is certainly true.
The book is a lot longer than I thought it would be and the way the iPad breaks it up I kept thinking the book was over, when a new section would start. This should allow easy stopping points on later to check on the kiddos and end the book if they are out.
It took almost the whole book, but mine were out - and the one that never falls asleep first (whose name I was using throughout) was sleeping first.
I downloaded the book while they were running up and down the hallway, 20min later I typed this review.

Magic in a book!

This book was amazing. Granted, I have only used it once so far, but it was even worth the price for one blissful bedtime routine. My kids have NEVER fallen asleep while we read to them, not a ONE. They usually fall asleep after a couple stories, another trip to the bathroom, a sip of water, etc etc etc. It can take a while! Last night all THREE kids fell asleep before I had finished half of the book. Amazing!

Prefer the Audiobook, but both formats work!

We are "that" household that has problem sleepers. Our oldest is six and youngest is two. We co-slept with both and are now trying to transition our youngest to his own bed. Some nights, however, all four of us end up in the same bed fighting for space. Bedtime has always been a battle. It is has never been relaxing, no matter the bathing, book-reading, prayers, reassurances, or other techniques. We are tired, weary, cranky parents who needed a solution.

When I heard about this book, I bought it with low expectations; we tried so many things and nothing works. I read it to our six-year-old son; IT WORKED! He feel asleep peacefully halfway through the story! I tried again another night when he wouldn't settle down...it worked again! But, as others have noted, the book is long, has intentionally unusual sentence structure in places, and for the imaginative child, can prompt a lot of questions: "how does Roger know my name?" or "why do you keep saying down like that?" There is also a bit of straining to see pictures. The book worked after some re-direction but it wasn't as calm (for me) as I'd hoped.

For our two-year-old, the book version was an epic fail. I was literally reading in a calm soothing voice and yawning as he got bored and started jumping on the bed and doing somersaults.

So, I decided to try the audiobook version. Mostly because one night after reading several other books to our six-year-old I was that lazy. After a quick download we snuggled and relaxed and let someone else do the heavy lifting. There are two chapters to the audiobook, both just over 30 minutes. Chapter 1 has brief instructions and is read by a male voice. Chapter 2 is read by a female voice. Our son was asleep within 10 minutes. After a few nights, one of us would start the book and check on him; he has yet to make it to the 8-minute mark. Tonight, he swore to me he "just wasn't sleepy." Fast asleep in 8 minutes!

For our two-year-old, the audiobook has worked much better. There are no distracting pictures. It's the same voice every night. I turn the iPad over so there is no light. Tonight, I got both boys to go to sleep at the same time, yay!!

The thing I like most is the positive sleep messaging. Children are really empowered to learn relaxation and stress management skills in a way they can understand. Mama Rabbit suggests putting thoughts in a box at night for your brain to work on. The snail suggests slow movement and breathing. The owl leads them through relaxing each part of their bodies. The uncle does positive affirmations. I think it's a great tool.

About the Author

Linda Holtzman, Professor Emeritus at Webster University, has been a leader in media and diversity program development and teaching for 25 years. A weekly guest on the St Louis NBC affiliate, she has reviewed diversity messages in film and television and received grants for her work in the U.S., Israel and Palestine; analyzing media misinformation, stereotypes, and human rights activism. She serves as an anti-racism facilitator for local and national organizations and school districts and has received numerous awards for her work, including the Martin Luther King Award presented personally by Coretta Scott King.

Leon Sharpe is an adjunct professor at the Webster University School of Communications where he teaches courses that examine the role of film and other media in establishing and reinforcing patterns of social power. He is also founder and principal of The Praxis Group, a strategic consulting firm that specializes in building organizational capacity, developing effective leaders, training high-performance teams, leveraging workforce diversity, and managing institutional change. He has successfully designed and implemented employee efficacy and process improvement programs for a broad range of corporations, universities, school districts, government agencies, charitable foundations, social service providers, and community-based groups.

Joseph Farand Gardner, also know as J. Owl Farand, is a writer and Black Media Analyst for Owl’s Asylum and operates the design agency J. Farand, LLC. Mr Gardner attended Ranken technical College in St. Louis where he obtained an Associates Degree of Science in Web Development and graduated from St. Louis’ Webster University, earning a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Media Communications and serving as a Research Assistant to Professor Linda Holtzman.

About the Author

Dr. Harvey M. Deitel, Chairman of Deitel & Associates, Inc., has 42 years experience in the computing field, including extensive industry and academic experience. Dr. Deitel earned B.S. and M.S. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. from Boston University. He worked on the pioneering virtual-memory operating-systems projects at IBM and MIT that developed techniques now widely implemented in systems such as UNIX, Linux and Windows XP He has 20 years of college teaching experience and served as the Chairman of the Computer Science Department at Boston College before founding Deitel & Associates, Inc., with his son, Paul J. Deitel. He is the author or co-author of several dozen books and multimedia packages. With translations published in numerous foreign languages, Dr. Deitel's texts have earned international recognition. Dr. Deitel has delivered professional seminars to major corporations, government organizations and various branches of the military.

Paul J. Deitel, CEO and Chief Technical Officer of Deitel & Associates, Inc., is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management, where he studied information technology. Great to learn with, bad resources

This book is very good on teaching the basics of C#, and makes you think a bit. The tutorial driven approach enables you actually get experience in every chapter ( at the end of every chapter are good exercises). The problem is that you do not have the answers to the excercises available unless you have the Teacher edition ( this is a classroom book ) , and Deitel will not help you out in this area ( say if you are stuck on an excercise ).There are also 'Programming Challenges' at the end of every chapter that have you use command and concepts that you have yet to learn ( not in all but some ). Other than that, this tutorial is very good, just bad customer service from the authors.

I would say that this book would be the step after Deitel's C# How to Program. The concepts in this book are more mathmatic then what is in How to Program.

In essance I found explanations of most of the concepts vague.

If you are just beginning to program, then i would say do the How to Program first and Simply C# after. You should be able to write some decent programs and head into an ADO or ASP .net book from there.

Very good for a beginner

If you are new to C# and has no experience with other C based languages (C, C++, Java), then this book should be the first book you should read. All the rudimentry concepts are explained in detail. The practice problems are marvelous. The author, unlike most programming authors, clearly understands the paramount importance of writing practice programs to learn a new computer language.
If you want to have a heavy duty understanding of ADO, ASP, and OOP, then this book will come up short. But there are other books in the market that will fill that niche.

Nigel Blackaby is a partner and head of the international arbitration group at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in Washington DC. Nigel acts as counsel and arbitrator with a particular focus on Latin America. He has represented foreign investors and states in arbitration proceedings under the auspices of the ICSID, UNCITRAL, ICC, LCIA and AAA in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Nigel is an editor of Arbitration International, a council member of the LCIA Latin America Users' Committee and of the Advisory Board of the Investment Treaty Forum of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law. He is editor and co-author of International Arbitration in Latin America (2003), a co-author of A Guide to ICSID Arbitration (2004) and a co-author of the fourth edition of Redfern & Hunter on International Commercial Arbitration (2004). He is an occasional postgraduate lecturer in arbitration at the University of Paris I - Sorbonne.


Constantine Partasides is founding partner of Three Crowns LLP, a specialist international arbitration firm with offices in London, Paris and Washington DC. He has acted as counsel and arbitrator in approximately fifty ad hoc and institutional arbitrations, including under the rules of the ICC, LCIA, AAA and ICSID. In recent years, Constantine has specialised in arbitrations in the energy sector arising under contracts and investment treaties. Constantine co-authored the fourth edition of 'Law and Practice of International Commercial Arbitration', he is the news editor of the Journal International Arbitration Law Review, and a council-member of the LCIA's European Users Council.


Alan Redfern is a member of One Essex Court Chambers. He has acted as chairman, sole arbitrator or party-nominated arbitrator in numerous disputes, including ad hoc arbitrations, as well as those conducted under the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules and under the leading arbitral regimes, including ICC, LCIA, UNCITRAL, AAA and ICDR. Alan is a vice-president of the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris. He is also a non-executive director of the London Court of International Arbitration. He is on the international panel of the American Arbitration Association and of arbitral institutions in Europe, the Middle East and elsewhere.


Professor Martin Hunter is a Professor of International Dispute Resolution at Nottingham Law School and a member of One Essex Court Chambers. He has acted as an advocate, sole arbitrator or as chairman or member of tribunals of three arbitrators on many occasions. These include AAA, CDP, JCAA, ICC, LCIA. NAFTA, NAI and SIAC arbitrations, as well as arbitrations under the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules and other types of ad hoc arbitration. He was the chairman of the ICC Arbitration Commission's Working Group on Dissenting Opinions and Interim and Partial Awards (1985-89) and deputy chairman of the United Kingdom Department of Trade and Industry Committee on arbitration law (1990-97).

A very good text book covering some basic principles of international commercial arbitration

This was my first and the only book I have acquired for my university studies. Although the book claims to cover the whole topic, in some chapters it fails to provide sufficiently detailed materials mainly due to the absence of the analysis of the relevant case law. A good example is the so-called 'investment arbitration' conducted under the auspices of the ICSID. As this is also a part of international commercial arbitration a reasonable reader would expect the book to contain more cases and materials regarding the topic. Instead of this the content of the relevant chapter of the book (Ch.8) contains only a brief overview of the topic and does not contain even a brief commentary of the main principles of the ISCID Convention which would be desirable. Additionally, there is no mention of the relatively recent withdrawal from the ICSID regime announced by a number of Latin American countries, such as Venezuela, Bolivia and Ecuador which is a very important issue per se since it has bearing on the core principles of the Convention and enforceability of the arbitral awards issued under it.
Last but not least, the book does not contain any information about the so-called 'Emergency Arbitrator' procedure available now under a number of institutional arbitration rules and the topic of anti-suit injunctions is yet another point which has been touched upon by the author of present book very superficially.

Excellent Study Book

I recently joined a study group on International Arbitration and was in need of a good study book that covered all the basics. After some research this is the one I bought and I'm very glad I did, because it does cover all the basics, it has a decent amount of case references and has been very helpful to me.

This is the first book that really explains IFRS very well. The examples are understandable, it's comprehensive and helps on nearly every issue that might arise when dealing with IFRS.

Not value for money

The book looks to be a summary of the original IFRS text issued by IASB with elementary questions and examples and that too very few. I expected comprehensive disclosure examples and lots of multiple chaoice questions from elementary to highest level. IFRS being a disclosure based standard, the book should contain comprehensive disclosure examples for all permutations and combinations to the maximum possible extent

A Worthy Read For Younger AND Older Readers

This book seems to be written for a younger audience, and I have no doubt that preteens and up could read it without difficulty, but at the same time I feel that a lot of the themes and the nuance could go over the heads of younger readers. The use of accents, speech patterns, dress, and behavior to denote class, the writing of younger characters to think and behave as young people would and do while still keeping things moving forward at a good pace and keeping things both exciting and logical, the politics and relationships between adult characters: these things may be appreciated much more by adult readers than their younger counterparts. This is definitely a book which can be enjoyed by a wide range of ages. Twists and turns are difficult puzzles, but there are enough clues that a younger detective could still see what's coming if they're paying attention. The plot is thrilling, often intense, moving, and fascinating. The cultural standards surrounding daemons alone could make up their own encyclopedia. Some have claimed this book to be religious in nature, but while it does *deal* with religion quite a bit, I do not find it to be in any way advocating for any particular faith. If anything it warns against the nature of organized religion to become corrupt (without demonizing the religion itself). If you are concerned about the nature of the 'daemon' characters, be aware that the term is used in the old Greek sense more so than the 'different spelling for demon' sense; 'a supernatural being of a nature between gods and humans'. They are loosely intended to be an external version of the soul or spirit, not anything evil or bad. Be warned, though: this book does include terrible things happening to children, and several deaths. Younger children may find it frightening or upsetting. If you give this to your child be prepared to sit down with them and discuss the book when they are finished reading.

Great read for all ages

I finally read it! I bought a box set of the whole series and it had just been sitting on my shelf gathering dust. I knew this series was absolutely heaped with praise when it was published back in the late 90s, and I knew that I would probably like it, but for some reason I never got around to it. It was always that book I was going to read next but never got around to. Luckily, I pretty much scolded myself into reading it, and I'm sooo glad I did.

It really is a marvelous book.

The writing is clean, crisp, and concise. It flows beautifully and sucks you into the story. It may be a children's/YA book, but Pullman expects his readers to be mature and attentive. He doesn't treat you like an idiot. The prose isn't flowery or pretentious, but Pullman doesn't dumb it down just because it's a children/YA book. I like writers who treat young readers with respect.

Lyra is a strong, independent female character. The type that young girls should look up to. The novel also features some great supporting characters, my favorite being a giant polar bear named Iorek Byrnison. There are also some great villians, and whenever they are around you're just as scared as Lyra is.

The book is perfectly paced. There was never a dull moment. Something is always happening, and Pullman is great at ending each chapter with a slight cliffhanger. You feel you need to read just one more chapter to know what happens. And then another. And then another.

The ending was also extremely tense and climactic. One of the best I've read in a while.

My only complaint is that there was a recurring sequence of events. Lyra would get lost/captured, have to use her wits to get back to her friends, get back to her friends, and then eventually she would get lost/captured again and this whole sequence would repeat. It wasn't bad enough to warrant a lower rating, but I hope that Pullman doesn't rely on this plot device too heavily in the next 2 books.

All in all, this was a great read that I would recommend to anyone.

A World of Beauty, Mystery and Wonder

If I were to list my ten favorite books, "The Golden Compass" would surely be towards the top of that list. With each reading (an annual event) I am reminded of the beauty and mystery that is the fabric of this work. I think of it as a transcendent work in that it far exceeds the usual limits of this genre. Adolescent tales of magical worlds are understandably popular-the target audience is on the brink of enormous change and is feeling quite confined by the circumstances of their lives. These other books are, however, generally limited to fairly superficial characterization and plots which, while often exciting, are really just aimed providing the reader with an emotionally cathartic experience. There is nothing wrong with that; but, as the Golden Compass" shows, so much more is possible.

"The Golden Compass" is a more solid work because it is dealing with essential truths of our life and the nature of existence. While it is a fantasy, it is quite realistic in its portrayal of what it means to be human. At the most accessible level this means that the characters are fully developed. They are consistently portrayed and feel real. They are fully human (even if they happen to be bears or witches!). More profoundly, though, is the feel of the world created in this book. We live in a world of beauty and mystery. For countless reasons, however, we are generally cut off from this aspect of our nature. In this work, however, you can get a feel for this part of the fabric of our being. From the opening scenes at the school or on the streets of Oxford, we feel our grasp on the ordinary world slipping. This is our world-almost. These real people in this slightly altered time and place create a world of wonder. It is as though you looking at the unfolding of events through a shimmering silky black fog. It is not only a mystery in the sense of plot development, but also in the more profound way as we, through Lyra's eyes, let go of our firm holding of our ideas of how things should be.
