A very well paced and dramatic narrative--loses focus somewhat with too many sub plots/ antagonists.

This book is the mirror image, if you will, of Amish Tripathi's Shiva Trilogy. While Amish had a good concept, all his books suffered from a distractingly bad writing style, shoddy editing and meandering plot--weaknesses which were papered over by some artfully intelligent (dare I say cunningly smart) publicity.

The reason I say "The Guardians of the Halahala" is a mirror image is, that the weaknesses in Amish's books are almost completely avoided. The book has a plot that is masterfully narrated, characters are compelling and several sequences are so filled with dramatic tension, you can't put down the book. On the other hand, the issue with the book is in terms of the concept, which could have been thought through some more. On the face of it, its a marvelous premise--that some Halahala was secreted away at the time of the Samudra Manthan, and now threatens Cosmic equilibrium. This in itself, should have been the main plotline of the book--where the righteous and valorous King Vikramaditya is entrusted with the Halahala by none other than Lord Shiva himself, and the subsequent efforts he needs to take to safeguard it against the covetousness of the Devas and the Asuras.

But the book gets into way too many sub plots, and makes Vikramaditya face too many antagonists. You get reminded of the "Spiderman 3" movie, where Spiderman had to battle Sandman, Venom and Green Goblin Junior!! Here, King Vikramaditya has to not only safeguard the Halahala against divine, cosmic forces, he also needs to guard India's western & North western frontiers against marauding Hunas and Shakas, and as if that wasn't enough, has to deal with perfidious actions by a supposed ally, Magadha, to the east. With all due respect to the author, probably any 2 of these sub plots would have been enough for the book. The Magadhan angle could easily have been explored in a subsequent book--after all, this is a series--what was the need to crowd so many elements into one novel?

Besides, the author needs to brush up on Indian mythology. "Asura" and "Rakshasa" are terms denoting two different mythical beings. Like the Devas, these two branches also share the same father but are born of different mothers. So it gets irritating after a point, when the author keeps switching back and forth between the two.

That said, this is a very well paced narrative, well imagined, and certainly, one would want to read the next part of series.

The experience of getting lost in history was extraordinary. I love the way author provided the ancient Indian map and casting, which help to relate even easily. I would like to give the author 5 star for selection of words, also for using authentic words from Sanskrit or other Indigenous languages.
But unfortunately the experience with Amazon/Tabletopart was NOT good, as seems they are selling the incomplete book with total number of pages 410. Although any other site the total number of pages for this book is 428.

Poison, Gods and a brave Human

These authors do an excellent job discussing the various statistical methods

Finally, a stats tutorial that I understand! These authors do an excellent job discussing the various statistical methods. They give examples of coding and interpretation in SAS, Stata, and SPSS. They even have sample data to download so you can practice your skills with the book. An excellent resource! I intend to purchase other Blue Book series chapters as I need them, as I have yet to find anyone who explains stats in such a concise manner!

What is “the right price?”

Pricing is one of the trickiest elements of any business. Price too high and you risk losing business you want to win. Discount too often or too much, and you risk people thinking your product is cheap or you’re for sale. The other problem with a poor pricing strategy is that you will go broke selling to the wrong customers.

Peter Hill wants to help you.

In Pricing for Profit, Hill argues that “most businesses are already worth more than they have the courage to charge.”

What I love about Pricing for Profit is that Hill talks about the value scale and why pricing is really about what the value is to each customer or client. For example, I often shop at Whole Foods because it’s convenient (quick) and the quality is good. But it’s certainly not cheap. I shop at Amazon, on the other hand, because it is good and cheap. But it’s takes longer to get a new product in my hands than if I just walked into my neighborhood Best Buy.

Like the best business books, Pricing for Profit is meant to be actionable. Chapters on creating packages, choices, and options offer new ways to think about what you’re offering and how you’re selling. And the entire book is filled with action steps to think through how to implement a smarter pricing strategy for your business. Unless you have the whole pricing equation nailed down, you’re going to find something in this book that you can put to use in your business.

The fastest way to improve profitability

The quickest and most effective way to improve the profitability of your business is to raise your prices, according to Peter Hill in this book. You should also be aiming to increase the number of customers, the frequency of transactions, the average value of each transaction, and the efficiency of the business, but price rises have the fastest and most direct effect on your profits.

The problem is that most business owners find it very difficult to raise prices. People naturally want to please others and avoid the risk of complaints and confrontation, so they find it much easier to pursue almost any other course of action. Accordingly, the author provides numerous different suggestions of ways in which prices can be increased in a manner which minimises the amount of stress and the fear of losing valuable customers, including:

* Limit discounts, for example by requiring timely payment in exchange
* Replace all discounts with cash-back offers, as the cash is not given back until payment is made and it is more painful to give cash than a discount, so that the total amount given away is likely to reduce over time
* Use prices which are not round numbers, because they are less likely to attract bargaining
* Instead of giving discounts, add more value to your offering
* Make sure you communicate the value which you are providing
* Build future contact into the deal for the initial sale
* Have a very top-of-the-range option that is significantly more expensive than any other option; this will make your other offerings appear to have better value
* Ask customers for permission to increase prices
* Offer a money-back guarantee to justify a higher price

The contents of the book are easily understandable by a business person who has no training in financial management. I did not find anything particularly new while reading, but by the end of the book the author had thoroughly persuaded me that trying to win customers by offering bigger and bigger discounts is not likely to lead to a profitable outcome. I highly recommend the book for anyone who runs a business.
